Record Highlight — D-Town Brass

D-Town Brass’s name is only an indication of what you might expect to hear from this savory jazz outfit: The 14-piece ensemble indeed spouts a great deal of brass, along with drums, marimba, bass, keys and vibraphone. Every D-Town Brass composition is so deliciously distinct, you’d never know you were listening to the same collection of crazy cats. Since D-Town Brass doesn’t fit snuggly into any cohesive genre, it is more prudent to highlight the diversity among their scintillating selections.  Check out their album Golden Belt — available on 180 gram wax now!

Record Highlight — Dreambook

only shadows cover art

Dreambook is self-described as “heavy distorted guitars with swirly lead lines & fuzzed out bass over deeply textured drum beats.”  Their new album, Only Shadows is available for purchase early before the “official” RSD release date at four record stores —  a.k.a. music (philly), Long In The Tooth (philly), Sound Cat Records (pittsburgh) and Reckless Records (chicago).  Pressed on random color wax, grab it while you can!

Record Highlight — Ben Wilson & The Kimberlies

Ben Wilson and The Kimberlies is a band. Kind of.

That is to say Wilson and Doerner have known each other since they were three. Wilson used to want to make films. Doerner still makes short films and has his own business designing things for companies. Ben and Emily met and disregarded each other at age eight then reunited and started talking about things at thirteen. Emily is an auditor. Parker joined the scene when he was born. He is currently in high school and contributed a catchy chorus and may start to play with The Kimberlies once he can figure out the bass or something.

For several reasons, which he would rather not go into, Wilson has become less interested in film. He has always written songs. Some people like his songs. “Some people probably don’t, but no one has been brave enough to tell me to my face yet.” says Wilson. The new album, My Good Side, was made for the first group of people.

The melodies are pleasant, the instrumentation relatively simple… Everybody sings. Emily takes cello lessons. All of them can snap their fingers on beat. Some can play instruments. That’s why Ben Wilson and The Kimberlies is a band. Kind of.

Customer Highlight — Tapes ‘n Tapes

The release date for Outside, the brand-new LP from Tapes ‘n Tapes is only a week away; hot off the GGR presses and shipped to the distributor….

To celebrate, the band put another new song from the album, Badaboom, on its website.  Just head on over to tapesntapes.com to check it out!

If you’re going to be in Minneapolis on 1/11/11, you should join the band for the official record release party.  First, they’ll be playing a FREE in-store performance at the Electric Fetus at 7pm.  PBR, Modern Cafe, and Peace Coffee will be providing FREE food and beverages.  After the in-store, they’re moving the party over to Nick and Eddie for an Outside listening party, giveaways, and DJ sets by Mike2600 and Tapes ‘n Tapes.  It’s gonna be an all night celebration!

There are a lot of other pre-album release festivities planned for this week.  The best way to keep up with everything is via the Tapes ‘n Tapes Facebook and Twitter.

Holiday Thanks

Gotta Groove Records did not exist a year ago.  The dream of starting a vinyl pressing plant was nothing more than idle speculation then.  It was in mid-January of 2009 that the journey to making this dream a reality began to take shape, thanks to the willingness of Jerry Salerno at Dynamic Sun to depart with his assets after over sixty years of being in business.
Moving the presses and the associated equipment to Cleveland took place last March, and the Tyler Village space in which we now reside was confirmed in May.   It wasn’t until late August that we were in a position to press our first records.

Upon reflection, we have come an incredibly long way in a relatively short period of time. Such progress only occurs due to the efforts of many people.  Dan Greathouse’s willingness to jump on board and tackle the job of learning, operating and repairing the machinery was a key first step.  Matt Earley and Tyler Kremberg joined up with us in June, and they have done a fantastic job spearheading our sales and marketing efforts.  Tim Thornton and my son, Vince, have both been working with us over the last couple of months as press operators, quality assurance and jacks of all trades.  My wife, Becky, has helped out with the books and provides sanity checks when needed.  We hope that our continued progress will allow us to hire more talented individuals, and provide some opportunities to people during these difficult economic times.
Thanks are also in order to our many suppliers; not only have they been providing timely delivery of quality product, they have been very helpful with their advice.  Of particular note is the selfless help and counsel provided by many of the people at the other pressing plants in the industry.  They could have viewed us as competition and ignored our overtures – that they did not speaks volumes about their integrity and their understanding that another plant producing quality records only helps our collective efforts to spread the vinyl love.  And, of course, thanks to our customers for taking a chance with the new guys and for their patience.

You are receiving this message because you make your living in the music industry.  Like us, you have a passion for music, and perhaps even for vinyl.  If vinyl isn’t already a part of your business plan, please consider it; thousands of artists and labels have seen the positive profitable and promotional value of the medium.  Whether you use Gotta Groove Records or any one of the other fine pressing plants, let’s make some records!

Record Shopping in the East Village

Those flat, round, black things with the hole in the middle that your father keeps stacked in his man cave: they’re called vinyl records.

Wow, you can collect album art via iTunes

iTunes now has album artwork.

So do we.  Except its real, and collectible.

And most people will actually care about it.
