Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit — The Nashville Sound

Image result for Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit The Nashville Sound

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, The 400 Unit, have announced the June 16th release of the highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers). The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed Something More Than Free.

Without exaggeration, Jason Isbell has become one the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. Isbell sings of the every day human condition with thoughtful, heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty, and the new album is no exception.

Drew McDowell — Unnatural Channel

Unnatural Channel LP

After the long overdue release of Drew McDowall’s debut solo album “Collapse” in 2015, the experimental music underground saw McDowall as an arrival of an artist that was always here, hiding in plain sight. He was quietly in the background, pulling the levers on some of the most influential recordings in electronic music and with shifting his focus from the role as band member of such legendary acts as Coil & Psychic TV along with his recent collaborative efforts alongside Tres Warren (of Psychic Ills) in Compound Eye, McDowall came to finally identity as a singular artist and figurehead to a movement that has vitally required his presence.

His second full length endeavor for Dais Records is aptly titled “Unnatural Channel,” allowing McDowall to allocate offerings to the ghosts of his past using methods not fully understood.  Moving forward from the impact left with his first album, “Unnatural Channel” moves McDowall into more uncharted territory. From the opening mark, Drew’s distinct fingerprint is evident on the track “Tell Me the Name”, his signature ambient ebb and flow to pulsing electronics painted over reverberated percussions that have been pulled apart and spun around the spectrum.

Laser Background — Dark Nuclear Bogs

Laser Background

Andy Molholt twists vast assortments of wonky sounds into kaleidoscopic psych-pop as Laser Background, and later this week he’ll release a whole batch of knotty new tunes on his album Dark Nuclear Bogs (an anagram of the band name). It’ll serve as the follow-up to last year’s deliciously dizzying Correct and finds Molholt softening some of the project’s rougher edges to make for a listen equally as inventive but that goes down a bit easier.

“Francine” is a mid-tempo ballad that manages to blend warbly ringing and a geometric guitar line into a dreamy mosaic. Meanwhile “Climb The Hill” uses Saturday morning cartoon keyboards alongside a relentless drum machine to create a melodiously twisted fantasy. And on “Slubberdeguillion,” Moholt throws his voice through a blearing processor to sound like nothing short of an intoxicating nightmare. Altogether, the album congeals into a remarkably holistic listen. As Molholt explains:

The first track “Mostly Water” is meant to be a song about birth, about beginning anew, and the last track “Bright Field” is very specifically about death. So there is a bit of a journey to this album, and a lot of self-reflection. I intentionally repeated words, phrases, musical ideas, etc. in different spots on the record.

Rob Mehl – House On The Rock b/w Taste And See

Read the blog post: alohagotsoul.com/2017/04/10/interview-rob-mehl-talks-house-on-the-rock-and-taste-and-see/

Brought to light in the 21st century on Psychemagik’s Magik Sunrise compilation in 2013, “House On The Rock” is a shimmering, sophisticated groove with a strong West Coast sound — after all, songwriter Rob Mehl spend nearly three decades between Southern California and Hawai‘i, where the surf was too irresistible to leave behind for very long. He first moved to Oahu in 1958, a year before Hawaii became the 50th state.

“House On The Rock” has become a staple for summer-ready mixtapes from DJs and collectors, including multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee of the modern day Yacht Rock group Young Gun Silver Fox.

The equally strong “Taste And See” on the flipside provides the only lyrical reference to Hawai‘i (“mangos and papayas got flavors of their own”) while remaining in line with Mehl’s smooth West Coast vibe — he hired two of Chuck Mangione’s colleagues for the recording, guitarist Steve O’Conner and horn player John Rekevics.

Surprisingly, Mehl’s original vision was to do an album of traditional Hawaiian music, but one day a friend told him he’s too “haole” and the idea just won’t work. “I was crushed, I was devastated. Taste And Sea, it was gonna be this mix of songs I’d written and kanaka wai wai (Hawaiian songs).”

The Figgs — The Man Who Fights Himself

The Story Behind The Release (in the words of Mike Gent, April 2017).

In the spring of 2008, we rolled into Los Angeles armed with a batch of brand new, unrehearsed songs and keyboardist Scott Janovitz. On top of the studio time we had booked, I had the terrible idea of adding shows to our schedule. We would record all day, take a dinner break, go to whatever show was booked, stay up all night catching up with west coast friends, then do the same thing the next day, then the next, and the next….Not the best situation for getting usable takes.

Sessions continued for a bit in Philly at G Love’s studio and then a lot of time passed before we continued work on the album. I’ve always felt that the band really needed a producer for this record. We had successfully produced Palais & Follow Jean on our own, but by the time we hit this record, we had run out of steam in the production dept.

The next set of sessions in 2009 we did at Scott Riebling’s studio. Scott recorded the first Gentlemen record and I’ve always enjoyed working with him. Just what the doctor ordered… Those sessions were so easy and fun, it inspired us to book a final set of sessions with Seth Powell at the original location of his Soundcheck Republic studio to finish the record.

The Man Who Fights Himself was finally released in spring of 2010 (Two years after we started it in LA) with very little fanfare.

The idea to remix some of the record has always been in the back of my mind. A few people over the years have asked when this would be released on vinyl. It made sense to me that when we did get around to putting it out on vinyl, that I would take the masters, remix most of the record, and have it remastered by Mike Quinn specifically for vinyl. Well, I finally got around to this project last Oct-Dec with the help of Ducky Carlisle.

Matthew Logan Vasquez — Does What He Wants

Does What He Wants (LP)

Matthew Logan Vasquez is feeling optimistic.

That’s not necessarily apparent the first time you spin his new full-length solo album. Each track on Matthew Logan Does What He Wants feels urgent and intense. Impatient landlords, financial woes and other frustrations fan the agitation embedded in the opening track, “Same.” Isolation darkens the brooding images of “From Behind The Glass.” Death takes a bow on “The Fighter.” Vasquez can’t help but juxtapose the celebration of “Fatherhood” with a lament that “we ain’t got the money to pay the hospital.”

The music enhances this impression. As fans of his work with Delta Spirit and Middle Brother know well, Vasquez knows how to fuse passion and poetry in his writing and then ignite this volatile mix with extraordinarily expressive singing. In this sense he stands as a peer and a worthy successor to those who influenced him as an up-and-coming artist — Neil Young, Kurt Cobain, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed and others often mentioned, none of them known for their upbeat, sunny lyrics.

The Does What He Wants pre-order is up for now, and the album will be released by Dine Alone Records on April 21.  Also, the Does What He Wants tour has begun, hitting many dates across the U.S. between now and May 27.
