Record Highlight — Matthew Logan Vasquez

2015 (The Year of The Ram) has been a year of major change for Matthew Logan Vasquez. He moved with his wife, Marthe, from Brooklyn to Austin, he saw the birth of his first child Thor, and after a decade since founding his critically acclaimed band, Delta Spirit, he’s finally decided to go it alone FOR THE FIRST TIME, with his solo debut, The Austin EP, to be released November, 2015 , and a full length LP, Solicitor Returns, to shortly follow in early 2016 (it just shipped out from GGR this week).

Matt went solo for simple reasons– to return to the style of rock he loves. And when he went solo he REALLY went solo. He plays every instrument on the record, except for two drum tracks and one guitar track. Delta Spirit undoubtedly will be back but he wanted to make a collection of music without the influence of his beloved brethren (it’s only natural for a frontman to feel the need to let loose from time to time). You will hear his new material and you will hear Iggy Pop. Neil Young. Kurt Cobain. Gram Parsons. But ultimately, you’re hearing Matthew Logan Vasquez.

Record Highlight — Danen Kane

A tender, finger-picked acoustic guitar chimes seven notes, descending a scale like a waterfall. Six notes follow, down again but then back up to a hopeful and bright rest. Then, Danen Kane’s expressive voice declares the omnipresence of the Author of music: “He’s in the breath inside you / He’s in the falling rain / He’s in the light that shines on / every morning day.” A subtle, atmospheric electric guitar undergirds the melody with a double-time pulse, lending dimension and gradually moving the listener from reflection to response.

So begins “The Song that Set Us Free”, the standout opening track from Kane’s latest album Flesh and Soul. For the uninitiated, it’s a fine introduction to Danen Kane’s songcraft. His music leads the listener on the sort of journey that makes you look back in wonder and say,how did I get here? Two minutes into “The Song,” and without realizing that Kane has gradually increased the tempo by one beat per minute every 30 seconds, you’ve collected potential energy and you’re eager for something to happen. Then, at 2:15, Kane breaks all convention and lets the song explode. Cymbals crash, lyrical laughter bursts, and celebration ensues.

Danen Kane has never been afraid to break convention in his music, but he has a remarkable ability to maintain accessibility and consistency of voice while creating eclectic and sometimes surprising tunes. Part of that ability comes from his unconventional path to music ministry. Kane’s first love was not piano or guitar, it was basketball. In fact, he didn’t do anything musical until he was 20 years old, when he felt a strong call from God to lay down the hours invested in his sport and focus on pursuing his faith.

Record Highlight — Hypofixx

Lashdigit Records is an independent, out-of-pocket record label that was created to release projects by Carlos Marzano.

The label was originally formed in the Bay Area in 1997 as The House of Fixx Records and was used to release demo recordings by Adverse Side-FX, a San Jose, CA based band that Carlos played drums for. The label name was later shortened to HOF Records and the first official release, “Corporate Life,” was pressed in 1998. A full-length album, “A Tale of Lunatic Daring,” was later released in 1999 as well as “The Maggot EP” shortly thereafter.

In March 2000, Carlos moved to New York City and began his solo project HypoFixx. Several singles, albums, and videos were released, giving him a humble amount of local and international success. In 2004, HOF Records was renamed to Lashdigit Records because of a dispute with another entity using the same name. Both HOF Records are now dissolved.

Hypofixx – Postmechanical: Retrospective is a collection of work spanning 10 years, including three albums and two remix EPs, and is being released on vinyl for the first time.

Record Highlight — John Moreland

Some days, being John Moreland has to hurt. As others bury experiences and stifle regrets, Moreland pokes old wounds until you’re sure they’ve got to be bleeding again. It’s painful. But in Moreland’s care, it’s also breathtakingly beautiful. With the release of his highly anticipated third solo album High on Tulsa Heat (available now via Thirty Tigers), he offers another round of the lyrics-first, gorgeously plaintive songs that have earned him devoted listeners across the country.

Record Highlight — Constantine

Constantine’s debut LP Day Of Light will lead you on a lysergic odyssey filled with flute, sitar, Mellotron, electric harpsichord & more. The LP includes help from members of legendary ’71 folk psychedelic masterpiece O.W.L. (Of Wondrous Legends), including album art by Stephen Titra. A strong emphasis is placed on songwriting and arrangement, while the songs themselves have a Baroque, nuanced and hopeful atmosphere. Fans of the 1969/70 dense, delicate and psychedelic/folk psych sound need to get Day Of Light into your ears!

Record Highlight — Tapan

TAPAN is a duo from Belgrade. Title track, “The City”, takes few minutes to get going, but when it does… its like a James Chance/no wave saxophone on some kind of funky slo mo euro techno. The other 3 tracks drift in and out like some kind of night time fog on a glassy lake with live instruments/percussion peeping out from the hills. For deep and moody waistoids and freaks only.

Record Highlight — Daniel Martin Moore

DMM is from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He has released five albums to-date: three via Sub Pop, and two via his own OK Recordings (a label that possesses the clear aim of bringing some great tunes to some discerning ears). Record Highlight – Peter Webb

Liminal Space cover art

Liminal Space is Atlanta artist Peter Webb‘s debut album. Through it, Webb shares his own perspective in territories of songwriting cliché: honesty, emotion, uncertainty, fear. The songs are informed by time spent in the wilderness as much as time spent in the urban environment; reflections on the paradox of a life split between the two. Expression through the medium of lyrical verse is the focal point here, supported musically by Webb and his peers. Overwhelmingly, the sentiments are about process — the process of deconstructing the dominant, damaging narratives of our society; the process of getting close to other people; the process of overcoming darkness; the process of subduing one’s own impediments to presence of mind and powerful experience.

Record Highlight — Spray Paint

Spray Paint

After an action-packed year of touring the world, Spray Paint return with their second LP of 2015, Dopers. It was recorded last August in the middle of 87 shows in 66 cities and in 12 different countries by Chris Woodhouse (The Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Mayyors). Easily the most hi fi they have ever been recorded, but without losing the scum. Moments of Jesus Lizard, Glenn Branca, Sister-era Sonic Youth come to mind at different points. Dopers is set for release October 23rd on Monofonus Press and you can cheek out the first smasher that debuted on Noisey.
