Junior Astronomers — Body Language

North Carolina’s own Junior Astronomers return with Body Language, the long awaited follow up to their acclaimed 2013 album, Dead Nostalgia.

Over the last few years, Junior Astronomers have made friends and fans across the US through their touring and shows, supporting artists including Manchester Orchestra, Modest Mouse, All Get Out, Piebald, The Weeks, and many others. In between touring, the band has steadily written and released new music through a series of 7″ EPs, all the while working on material for their new album.

Body Language is a record about love, growth, and the inevitability of change through the course of life. The album thoughtfully portrays the nuances of coming of age, the complexities of relationships, and finding a new normal in a constantly changing world.

When it came time to record, Junior Astronomers set out to capture a sound that showcased their own evolution as a band. Working with engineer and producer Mike Pepe (Taking Back Sunday, Modern Chemistry), the band spent time exploring and recording sound in Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Recordings (Dinosaur Jr., Wilco, Ben Folds Five), before having Dan Millice (A$AP Rocky, Townes Van Zandt) at Engine Room Audio add the final mastering touches. The culmination of their efforts was an album that musically and lyrically shares a theme of rebirth and growth.

David Bazan – Care

Image result for david bazan care

Care cements a new era for David Bazan as a solo artist. His music has moved passed acoustic guitars and jumped headfirst into synth-laden pieces drenched in texture. Standout “Disappearing Ink” demonstrates that evolution, bringing a blistering, dark funk feel to his brooding punk. The album’s final songs find Bazan experimenting with new sonic spaces — some twinkling gently, others booming and begging to be heard.

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist Jason Isbell and his mighty band, The 400 Unit, have announced the June 16th release of the highly anticipated new album, The Nashville Sound (Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers). The Nashville Sound is the follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed Something More Than Free.

Without exaggeration, Jason Isbell has become one the most respected and celebrated songwriters of his generation. He possesses an incredible penchant for identifying and articulating some of the deepest, yet simplest, human emotions, and turning them into beautiful poetry through song. Isbell sings of the every day human condition with thoughtful, heartfelt, and sometimes brutal honesty, and the new album is no exception.

Drew McDowell — Unnatural Channel

Unnatural Channel LP

After the long overdue release of Drew McDowall’s debut solo album “Collapse” in 2015, the experimental music underground saw McDowall as an arrival of an artist that was always here, hiding in plain sight. He was quietly in the background, pulling the levers on some of the most influential recordings in electronic music and with shifting his focus from the role as band member of such legendary acts as Coil & Psychic TV along with his recent collaborative efforts alongside Tres Warren (of Psychic Ills) in Compound Eye, McDowall came to finally identity as a singular artist and figurehead to a movement that has vitally required his presence.

His second full length endeavor for Dais Records is aptly titled “Unnatural Channel,” allowing McDowall to allocate offerings to the ghosts of his past using methods not fully understood.  Moving forward from the impact left with his first album, “Unnatural Channel” moves McDowall into more uncharted territory. From the opening mark, Drew’s distinct fingerprint is evident on the track “Tell Me the Name”, his signature ambient ebb and flow to pulsing electronics painted over reverberated percussions that have been pulled apart and spun around the spectrum.

Image may contain: text

The Lost Counts will help you find your soul. Whether it be in a funky soul-jazz organ cooker, a Memphis-soul stew, or a piping hot gut-bucket boogie, these boys will get you moving. The Lost Counts are comprised of members, Josh Perdue on guitar, Nate “Count” Basinger on Hammond Organ, and either ace percussionist Johnny Radelat or Bobby Trimble on drums. Although The Lost Counts specialize in the kind of instrumentals that cause rare groove aficionados to salivate, guitar slanger Josh Perdue, also boasts some soulful pipes!

Laser Background — Dark Nuclear Bogs

Laser Background

Andy Molholt twists vast assortments of wonky sounds into kaleidoscopic psych-pop as Laser Background, and later this week he’ll release a whole batch of knotty new tunes on his album Dark Nuclear Bogs (an anagram of the band name). It’ll serve as the follow-up to last year’s deliciously dizzying Correct and finds Molholt softening some of the project’s rougher edges to make for a listen equally as inventive but that goes down a bit easier.

“Francine” is a mid-tempo ballad that manages to blend warbly ringing and a geometric guitar line into a dreamy mosaic. Meanwhile “Climb The Hill” uses Saturday morning cartoon keyboards alongside a relentless drum machine to create a melodiously twisted fantasy. And on “Slubberdeguillion,” Moholt throws his voice through a blearing processor to sound like nothing short of an intoxicating nightmare. Altogether, the album congeals into a remarkably holistic listen. As Molholt explains:

The first track “Mostly Water” is meant to be a song about birth, about beginning anew, and the last track “Bright Field” is very specifically about death. So there is a bit of a journey to this album, and a lot of self-reflection. I intentionally repeated words, phrases, musical ideas, etc. in different spots on the record.
