Brad Almond — A Tree Falls In The Forest

A Tree Falls in the Forest cover art

Brad Almond is an award winning songwriter, formerly of Delaware band, “Clive”. He now continues to write and perform folk tunes whenever possible.  His new album, A Tree Falls In The Forest is available now.

Record Highlight — Alessandro Adriani

Alessandro Adriani has become a trusted source for all kinds of beyond-the-grave coldwave delights, from Maoupa Mazzochetti to The Neon Judgement.  Aside from his work in releasing forgotten gems and up to the minute synth incantations, Adriani has also been quietly issuing his own music. This has primarily taken the shape of Newclear Waves, having surfaced on split tapes and 7”s on Mannequin as well as an album on Desire back in 2012. Under his own name, production has been less forthcoming, although Adriani did pop up on Nico Fidenco’s 2015 album Zombi Holocaust with a remix of the track “The Magic Is In The Process”.

Now though it’s time for the Mannequin boss to delve back into the long player game with Montagne Trasparenti, via Monofonus Press. Adriani in fact collaborated with Willie Burns as Interbrain and delivered a track to the IXTAB compilationon the Austin, Texas-based label last year, but now he returns with nine tracks that further expand on his own interpretation of ghoulish body music.

Prairie Empire — The Salt

Prairie Empire is a Brooklyn-based band fronted by Brittain Ashford with Nim Ben-Reuvenon drums. The band will be touring this summer with the support of Jacki Paolella on bass, keyboard and vocals.

The first Prairie Empire album was released on Trailer Fire Records and recorded (unknowingly) in a Portland living room with the band Harlowe. Prior to that Brittain recorded a handful of things in her bedroom under her own name, most notably There, But For You, Go I, which was released on Paris-based Waterhouse Records.

When not writing for Prairie Empire Brittain performs with Dave Malloy‘s Ghost Quartet; she will head to Broadway in the fall with Malloy’s Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Nim Ben-Reuven is a freelance art director & graphic artist and is a hand-lettering badass.

Their next album, The Salt, will be released on Commodore Trotter Records very soon!

Grace Love & The True Loves – Self Titled

Grace Love and the True Loves cover art

Grace Love and the True Loves is an original 9-piece soul sensation from Seattle, WA. Following in the footsteps of Stax, Motown, King and Daptone artists, but with a sound all their own, Grace Love and the True Loves are setting a course as the next hot soul and funk number ready to sweep the nation with true cross-over appeal. On vocals, Grace Love is Seattle’s shining jewel of grit, beauty and power – think Etta James and Betty Wright meet Mahalia Jackson. Backed by the True Loves, her vocals float effortlessly over kickin’ back beats, smart horns, syncopated rhythms and sweet B-3 color. It’s the hip swinging, booty shaking, heart freeing sound you crave to hear live, but rarely do. Recorded directly to tape at Studio Litho, the full length self-titled album, is sure to bring rave reviews with a sound altogether unique to the Pacific Northwest.

The Self Titled record is available in a very limited quantity now.

Hackensaw Boys — Charismo

CharismoCoverArt.jpg

Charismo is the Hackensaw Boys record you’ve been waiting to hear. The 11-track album feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad of roots influences, and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, but it’s injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for over the years.

Produced by Larry Campbell – who has lent his talents to Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others – Charismosees the band reeled in and slightly refined, though still as spirited as ever. The songs (all written by longtime Hackensaws David Sickmen and Ferd Moyse) are tinged with an attitude of scrappy resilience, spinning tales and metaphors of everyday, working class struggles and triumphs. With Campbell’s production, the Hackensaw’s somewhat casual, porch-front aesthetic is sharpened around the edges, focusing in on the simple beauty of their melodies and the earnestness in their delivery.

Record Highlights – Dark Entries Releases

Four new titles shipped for Dark Entries Records – pre-orders for each are up now!

Ghibli – I’m Looking For You

Ghibli is the solo project of musician, producer, and vocalist Alberto Garbelli, from Milan, Italy. At the age of 23, while reading a comic book, he encountered the word Ghibli, which is the name of the wind of the North African desert – and also a Maserati car model. Inspired by Klaus Nomi and Nina Hagen, he began to sing in an operatic fashion. During this time Alberto would frequent the local discotheques. Watching the unique mix of performers and dancers, Alberto lost his inhibitions and was inspired to become an artist.

Some Bizarre – Don’t Be Afraid

Some Bizarre are a trio formed in Bergamo, Italy in 1983. The line-up is Marino Scarabelli (music, producer), Tiberio “Tyber” Scarfone (arrangement, producer) and Stefano Brignoli (lyrics, vocals). Tiberio was a DJ at a local discotheque, where he met Marino. Initially they considered calling themselves Funny Marvin, but settled on Some Bizarre after recruiting Stefano, whose initials mirror the name.

Brand Image – Are You Loving?

Brand Image is a trio formed in Bergamo, Italy in 1983. Created by the same group of musicians as their previous project Some Bizarre. The line-up is Marino Scarabelli (music, producer), Tiberio “Tyber” Scarfone (arrangement, producer) and Stefano Brignoli (lyrics) and vocalist Mauro Farina. Originally, Stefano sang the song but his performance was too close to the brand new Some Bizarre single, so they recruited Mauro for distinction.

Danio Dell’Aere – Eagles In The Night

Dario Dell’Aere is a New Wave musician, producer and singer from Milan, Italy. At the end of the 1970’s Dario performed in a mime show influenced by the glam cliches of David Bowie. In 1979, he met Victor Life outside a cinema, and began a lifelong collaboration of projects: Diamond Dogs, Ice Eyes and Fockewulf 190. Musically, the duo were inspired by the Human League’s “Reproduction” and John Foxx’s “Metamatic”, while they took visual cues from the New Romantics Visage and Ultravox. With the Fockewulf 190 moniker, they created their own dark blend of Italo disco and New Wave, and released the hit singles “Gitano” and “Body Heat” in 1984.

Record Highlight — Robbie Fulks

Robbie Fulks Upland Stories Album Artwork

Robbie Fulks‘s storytelling through folk and bluegrass music on Upland Stories delivers the quieter, sometimes unsettling truths of humanity.

Coming of age in the 1960s and 1970s in Virginia and North Carolina, at the edge of the broad “upland” region referenced in the record’s title, provided depth and detail for Fulks’s songs about the mysteries of memory, the vanishing of cherished things, and the struggles of everyday life. Robbie tries to make songs that offer more than verse-chorus-hook: songs that have space, calmness, unresolved tensions, and the hallmarks of lived experience. This sort of complexity is displayed in “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals,” an intimate folk song from the perspective of a man who has let life’s possibilities pass him by, and in “Never Come Home,” in which a sick man returns to spend his last days among an unwelcoming clan of pious, hard-bitten East Tennesseans.

Available from Bloodshot Records April 1 (pre-order is up now).

Record Highlight — DJ Vague

Image of Dj Vague - Restoring Nature 12" (released 04/05/16) (limited 200)

Available for pre-order now (released 04/05/2016):  DJ Vague – Restoring Nature.  Drones created by Government Engineers, financed by the elite, built to keep the people in line ultimately rebel against their makers. A battle raged for decades until the drones decided to strike a deal with their once great overlords. The deal would allow the drones to continue to help with the enslavement of the lower rankings of mankind. In return, once the last of the elite left the planet to their new home, the Drones would begin to terraform the planet back to its original form of chaotic nature, ridding the planet of humans, technology and AI of any kind. Thus, Restoring Nature.  There is another deal happening… one kept hidden and in silence that will forever change the history of the ANARCHOSTAR.
