diNMachine — The Opposites of Unity

The Opposites of Unity cover art

The word “din” has two meanings. As a noun it refers to a prolonged, disruptive noise, as a verb it means to learn something by repetition. So it’s no wonder diNMachine makes music that is often challenging: its rhythmic energy and immersive auditory elements demanding a certain commitment from the listener. That’s not to say that their fusion of the eccentric, the propulsive and the avant-garde comes without a wild sense of fun…just that there’s nothing “cookie cutter” or “spoon fed” about it.

Like their home base of NYC, diNMachine’s amoebic dance-rock is awash in a rich multi-cultural blend of styles. It has the energy and power of youth oriented music while also appealing to the more cerebral of music lovers. Its Indian, African & South American styles interplay with jazz and avant-garde, all set upon a bed of field recordings, drones and an urban sensibility.

Advance Base — In Bloomington

In Bloomington is a live concert recording from December 11, 2015, documenting a rare, full-band version of Owen Ashworth’s nostalgic, melancholic bedroom pop project, Advance Base.

Drawing heavily from Advance Base’s previous two albums A Shut-In’s Prayer (one of MOJO Magazine’s top 20 albums of 2012) &Nephew in the Wild (PopMatters’ #1 Indie Pop album of 2015), In Bloomington explodes the claustrophobia of Ashworth’s (mostly) solo, lo-fi, drum-machine-accompanied home recordings into something grand, human & joyous, captured in glorious high fidelity.

Coffin Problem — S/T

Image of Coffin Problem LP

Here it is from Dizzybird Records — the debut from Coffin Problem (Grand Rapids, MI). Comprised of 4 guys that give a shit about tone…this is a monster of an LP. Choose-your-own adventures in life, sure, but take warning, some things are inescapable! Taxes. Bubbles in a swimming pool. The inspired feelings one gets while immersed in the wall of guitars on this album. Death. All things inevitable.

Embrace Coffin Problem, and you get wave after blissful wave that will send your drone-loving hearts into space. You get slow-burning epics and avalanche-inducing, frenzied finales. You get the impression that the members of Coffin Problem have better pedals than you. You get big, cinematic, Midwestern rock ‘n’ roll that you won’t soon forget.

iji – Bubble

iji (pronounced: ‘eehee’) is a West Coast pop group led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zach Burba of Seattle, WA. A consistent 10 years of touring and spewing countless, lush, home-made records and tapes has cemented iji as a notable voice in the USA’s underground DIY music scene. In 2015 iji released the highway opus, “Whatever Will Happen”, the band’s first studio album and debut with Team Love Records. iji now offers a new studio album that named itself “Bubble”.

While out on tour in 2015, iji began collectively writing down and sharing all band member’s dreams in one journal. This new practice inspired Burba to write an album in dream language; An album which explores the abstract and absurd tendencies of a confused and distracted mind. Recorded in only 5 days, the record is more of a band effort than any previous release, pointing to a raw and wild, new energy. Lightly tipping the scales more towards the DB’s than Squeeze; More towards Orange Juice than Aztec Camera. The current iji band, which features members of Sick Sad World, Pill Wonder and Neighbors, believes in playing without reservation, without fear. Trusting whatever comes out, simply for the love of wild music.

Lydia Loveless – Real

Lydia Loveless Real Album Art Bloodshot Records

Rejoice! Singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless’s highly anticipated fourth album, Real, will be released August 19th by Bloodshot Records.

Real was recorded at Sonic Lounge Studios on her home turf of Columbus, OH and was engineered and produced by Joe Viers. “I chose to work with Joe Viers, engineer and producer of my last three releases, again because I trust him completely not only with my music but with my words,” Lydia said. “There was a lot to say this time around and I wanted to return to that sort of playground and (sometimes literally) throw things at the wall. Whereas our previous records could be described as blunt or raw, this one I wanted to be known as honest, as true, as real (rimshot),” she added.

Dan Melchior — Plays ‘The Greys’

Plays 'The Greys' cover art

Dan Melchior is artist as perpetual motion machine. We could say “shark,” but Dan doesn’t sniff for blood in the water. Instead, he is inviting you to his private lake; his solace relies on his relentless creativity. Whether painting, writing, collaging or recording, Dan offers nothing less than words, images and sounds transmitted directly from his subconscious, but filtered through the rigorous process of a true artist. Dan’s latest offering is a superb collection of songs and sonic vignettes that dips down deep into life’s trenches. Here, where light has to fight to be noticed, misery, monotony and melancholy mingle and bleed into one another. Accordingly, Dan doesn’t play the blues, he plays the greys.
