David First — Same Animal, Different Cages Vol. 2: Solomonos for Analog Synthesizer LP

Image of *Subscription: DAVID FIRST "Same Animal Different Cages" Vols. 1-4

About Same Animal, Different Cages:  “Sometime in the late winter of 2014 I began experiencing a certain nagging artistic malaise. I felt like I was spending too much energy on live performances and not being as creatively vital as I’d like. With that in mind, I resolved to cut some cords in the New Year and get back to the aspects of the process I’d been missing – learning new things and creating and recording new work. I also decided to challenge myself, without running roughshod, to not get bogged down in the ‘revising, editing and perfecting’ of things – always a potential pitfall in this digital age – and make ‘honest’, unmediated tracks that would directly reflect what I’d discover. Choosing an instrument a month, through a regimen of daily practice, I would develop and record material that would result in an album by month’s end.” – David First

The first four volumes in the series will include explorations on acoustic guitar, analog modular synthesizer, harmonica, and sitar.  Available as a subscription from Fabrica Records.

The Leland Bluebird Sessions

Image result for leland bluebird sessions

The Leland Bluebird Recording Sessions is a project instigated and brought about by Waterloo Sunset Records and inspired by the work of the Fox Valley Blues Society, Blues On The Fox Festival Committee and the Fox Valley Music Foundation. The project is a recording tribute to the records that were produced on the top floor of the Leland Hotel in Aurora, Illinois during a period in time beginning on May 4, 1937 and ending on December 19,1938.

The cream of the crop in the Chicago and St. Louis blues scenes were assembled on a variety of dates during that period to record tracks for the Bluebird Label. The sessions were the brainchild of a Chicago businessman and freelance A&R person named Lester Melrose. Tampa Red, Washboard Sam, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Joe Williams, Walter Davis, Henry Townsend, Robert Lee McCoy, Merline Johnson, Sweet Peas Spivey, and a very young, John Lee Curtis ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson, amongst others, participated in many of the sessions.

The recordings are considered to be historic and very influential in laying down a foundation for rock and roll, big band music and post-war blues. The sessions helped to establish the harmonica as a lead instrument in blues ensembles while also lending credence to the notion that recordings sessions could be quick and efficient in using ‘house bands’ comprised of lead and session musicians accompanying each other on each other’s songs.

The rediscovery of these historic recordings lead to the formation of the Fox Valley Blues Society and the founding of the Blues On The Fox Festival both based in Aurora, Illinois. Several of the artists that participated in the original sessions are now members of the Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame and the song, ‘Good Morning, School Girl’, written and recorded by Sonny Boy Williamson, has also been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

The purpose of this tribute project is to pay homage to the artists that participated in those original recording sessions, and to help to ensure that their memory and those songs remain prominently known for ages to come.

Bazile Mills — Where We Are

wwacover.jpeg

Bazile Mills is an Indie/Alt band from Omaha, NE, formed in May of 2014. The name is a tribute to a time almost forgotten and the ghost town. The town of Bazile Mills was founded in 1882 after the first woolen mill in Nebraska was erected just north of town. Today there are only about 30 residents as the townspeople left after the mills closed. The group is based around songwriterDavid Mainelli and features versatile musicians around him. Tim Rozmajzl brings a gifted country/ blues lead guitar to the mix. Laura Streeter (former lead singer for Gauge) brings an array of instrumental talents and a powerful, moody/indie voice that combines with rhythm guitarist, Sam Vetter’s, unique voice as well. Dan Stein plays the bass and the lap steel guitar and Robb Clemens (formerly of Driven) brings plenty of band experience with the drums.

The band’s new EP – Where We Are – is available soon from Widmest Productions. Stay tuned!

King of the Tramps — Cumplir con el Diablo

Cumplir con el Diablo cover art

King Of The Tramps is an original roots-rock group, based in Auburn, IA, whose sound calls upon influences from modern roots rock, rhythm and blues, rock and southern, country rock. Their sound has been described as “Whiskey Gospel”.  The band has released three albums of original music, Good People in 2011, Wicked Mountain in 2013, and Joyful Noise in 2014.

The King Of The Tramps live show is a foot stompin’, hand clappin’ rock and roll gospel party, with plenty of crowd participation.  The band is comprised of Todd Partridge on Guitar and vocals, Justin Snyder on Guitar and Mandolin, Adam Audlehelm on Keys, Ryan Aum on Drums and Ryan McAlister on Bass.

With Cumplir con el Diablo, the 4th album from the group, the tramps show that their “Whiskey Gospel” sound has more energy than ever, and their stories ring as true and hard as life on the road. The record features 9 songs and one bonus track.  Cumplir con el Diablo is about the general themes of being mired in the overwhelming personal quagmires and external hypocrisies’ that pull us all down on a daily basis. Translated, the album title means “Meet the Devil”, it is intended in the universal sense, as in “The devil is in the details”, or “Having a devil of a time”.
