Alessandro Cortini and Merzbow — EMS Sessions

Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Japanese noise legend Massami Akita (Merzbow) bask in their mutual love for the EMS Synthi, a British synthesizer from the early 70’s notorious for it’s patch matrix, portability and distinct tone.

Astonishingly, these two disparate artists meld into a single sound as they flex the analog circuitry of the EMS Synthi in new ways; giving this classic synth a modern workout and proving that, in capable hands, a 40 year old analog synthesizer is a tool for the ages.

Grooms — Exit Index

GroomsExit Index combines the abandon of pop with the unease of American life in 2017, cloaking its hooks in a clamor of samples and distortion, its agitation expressed in its dream-poetry lyrics. The album as a whole is a study in contrasts—light meeting dark, amplifier fuzz surrounding big melodies, sampled friction squaring off with fluidly played basslines and tightly wound rhythms. Album opener “The Directory” shrouds itself in synth-dappled mist until singer-guitarist Travis Johnson, backed by ghostly harmonies, asks with increasing intensity, “Where are my millions, my millions, my millions?” “Dietrich,” meanwhile, pins itself on a steady bassline, its guitars whirling into a maelstrom as Johnson sings promises of fealty to a far-away target.

Strange Americans — Borrow You, Brother

It’s the kind of music that the Carhartt-wearing, hard-working, industrial beer-drinking, regular Americans would listen to — the ones who could end up on an episode of TV’s Dirty Jobs. It’s a little raw, a bit loud, unapologetic and honest. It’s Americana rock and roll and it’s something that Denver’s Strange Americans are crafting with both brawn and finesse, like a hot rod mechanic bringing back an old barn find.

In a sense, Strange Americans are rescuing something from the rust pile — straight-forward, no frills rock and roll, and a matching aesthetic that is heavy on songwriting and storytelling, but presented with reverb-drenched punch and passion — the way The Band or Crazy Horse would have done it.

Borrow You, Brother is the new full length album, available now —  recorded with Echo Lab engineer and producer Matt Pence (Centro-matic, Justin Townes Earle).

Junior Astronomers — Body Language

North Carolina’s own Junior Astronomers return with Body Language, the long awaited follow up to their acclaimed 2013 album, Dead Nostalgia.

Over the last few years, Junior Astronomers have made friends and fans across the US through their touring and shows, supporting artists including Manchester Orchestra, Modest Mouse, All Get Out, Piebald, The Weeks, and many others. In between touring, the band has steadily written and released new music through a series of 7″ EPs, all the while working on material for their new album.

Body Language is a record about love, growth, and the inevitability of change through the course of life. The album thoughtfully portrays the nuances of coming of age, the complexities of relationships, and finding a new normal in a constantly changing world.

When it came time to record, Junior Astronomers set out to capture a sound that showcased their own evolution as a band. Working with engineer and producer Mike Pepe (Taking Back Sunday, Modern Chemistry), the band spent time exploring and recording sound in Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Recordings (Dinosaur Jr., Wilco, Ben Folds Five), before having Dan Millice (A$AP Rocky, Townes Van Zandt) at Engine Room Audio add the final mastering touches. The culmination of their efforts was an album that musically and lyrically shares a theme of rebirth and growth.

Brainstory — Self Titled

BSm1.jpg

Brainstory is a tale of brothers bounded by blood, by fate, and a small town with nothing to do. Brothers brought together by some unknown magic that would set them free to create, to sing, and to play a music of the soul. To open a window of truth in a world of auto-tuned hamburger egos. To forever be pushing long hair out of their eyes as they explore the cosmos beyond the hot, dusty, world in which they’ve dwelled. And what a universe it is. One part Jazz and one part Psychedelia, with a whole lotta Soul put in the middle. Add some Hendrix and Mayfield, some Bossa, and some afro-latin groove and you’ve got the right idea. Pure fun-love-exploration music.

Their story begins in the long lost lands of the San Bernardino Valley, in the twilight zone known as Rialto, California: A hot, arid, dusty, wasteland of boredom and dirty trash-filled empty lots, which could’ve only given rise to the backyard punk jams of the boy’s teenage youth. Through Punk and skateboarding, brothers Kevin and Tony Martin found liberation from the monotony. But soon a hunger for more would grip the boys—for they grew up in a rich musical world far beyond that of the hardcore punk they admired. As long as they could remember, they were surrounded by their father’s soulful gospel expressions as a popular lead vocalist in the church. Every Sunday was a lesson in soul bearing performance. Frequent weekend visits to Grandma’s house also were important in shaping their musical destinies. As an avid Jazz and R&B fan, Grandpa Juan played the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Johnny Hodges, Count Basie and other 30’s and 40’s artists both on the turntable and on his tenor/alto sax. Swinging was the key lesson. Thus naturally, Jazz, folk, soul, and psychedelia would soon make a feast upon the brothers’ souls. “Bitches Brew (the Miles Davis album) was a big one for me”, says brother Tony. “All my life I had lived with a hunger for imagination and adventure. After listening to this album here was everything I craved, crafted in sound. After that first listen, I knew I wanted to be a musician.” In their early years, it was normal to hear the Doors blasting out of one room and Coltrane out of another. Sometimes it was Bob Dylan and Monk butting heads. Or Mingus and Smokey. There was always an eclectic set of ideas, melodies, and sounds. College and girlfriends may have separated them for a while but the calling was always there. It just wasn’t the right time. Many bands, gigs, and demo-recordings later, the final piece would be found to unite the brothers at last.

Originally an acoustic guitar duo the band grew into a full piece outfit with the return of Tony and the addition of longtime jazz trio member Eric Hagstrom. Armed with a renewed love for the electric jazz sounds of their inspiration, the trio of destiny was now complete. The new EP is out now, and the band is touring with Chicano Batman through the summer.

Rob Mehl – House On The Rock b/w Taste And See

Read the blog post: alohagotsoul.com/2017/04/10/interview-rob-mehl-talks-house-on-the-rock-and-taste-and-see/

Brought to light in the 21st century on Psychemagik’s Magik Sunrise compilation in 2013, “House On The Rock” is a shimmering, sophisticated groove with a strong West Coast sound — after all, songwriter Rob Mehl spend nearly three decades between Southern California and Hawai‘i, where the surf was too irresistible to leave behind for very long. He first moved to Oahu in 1958, a year before Hawaii became the 50th state.

“House On The Rock” has become a staple for summer-ready mixtapes from DJs and collectors, including multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee of the modern day Yacht Rock group Young Gun Silver Fox.

The equally strong “Taste And See” on the flipside provides the only lyrical reference to Hawai‘i (“mangos and papayas got flavors of their own”) while remaining in line with Mehl’s smooth West Coast vibe — he hired two of Chuck Mangione’s colleagues for the recording, guitarist Steve O’Conner and horn player John Rekevics.

Surprisingly, Mehl’s original vision was to do an album of traditional Hawaiian music, but one day a friend told him he’s too “haole” and the idea just won’t work. “I was crushed, I was devastated. Taste And Sea, it was gonna be this mix of songs I’d written and kanaka wai wai (Hawaiian songs).”
