Image result for turnpike troubadours a long way from your heart

With their highly anticipated fourth album A Long Way from Your Heart, the Turnpike Troubadours sextet is poised for even bigger breakthroughs. Narratives put to music are nothing new, but Felker and his bandmates have upped the ante, creating a web of unforgettable characters that show up on album after album in songs that are both catchy and musically complex: men and women with their backs against their wall, represented realistically but also imbued with dignity. “It feels like going home to see that those characters are still alive in a way that movies and literary writers have always done,” frontman Evan Felker says of the recurring favorites. “It feels good. There they are, all based on people that I know and love. They’re composite characters based on real people.”

A Long Way from Your Heart was produced by Grammy winner Ryan Hewitt (The Avett Brothers, Flogging Molly, Red Hot Chili Peppers). The result is a rare triumph––an album that hooks immediately but then rewards listeners willing to dig deeper. “I love what we as a band have turned into and how we treat songs,” Felker says. “That’s something we’ve grown into––adding some sort of oddly theatrical element to the musicianship to help the story along, to sum up where or who the character is to give him a little bit of landscape. It’s not just an acoustic guitar and a guy telling you what somebody’s doing.”

Golden Streets Of Paradise — World War

Formed in the latter days of 2013, Golden Streets of Paradise is a Cleveland, Ohio-based duo comprised of Adam Boose (drums / programming) and Myk Porter (guitar / vocals).  Utilizing Adam’s experience in electronic music and Myk’s background in guitar-driven rock and roll, GSOP’s music reflects their mutual love for hook-laden, well-written, danceable songs.

Kim Boekbinder – Noise Witch

Kim Boekbinder is a noise witch, casting neon spells over shadowed rooms with her hypnotic synth incantations and pulsating basslines. Following up the success of 2013’s electro alt-pop space epic The Sky is Calling, Kim will release NOISEWITCH on September 8, 2017. Mixed by Joel Hamilton (Highly Suspect, Pretty Lights, The Black Keys) at Studio G in Brooklyn, the new album is danceable witch-pop, each song is a spell cast on the audience.

Kim has spent the last few years compelling audiences the world over with hypnotic video installations that complement her music, using looping, throbbing, layered soundscapes to craft a live show that was described by the peerless Peaches as “intense!” She’s performed to loyal fans in Australia, Russia, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Germany, France, England and the United States at such iconic venues as the Sydney Opera House, Caesar’s Palace Grand Ballroom, the Great American Music Hall, Webster Hall, and The Fillmore.

Alessandro Cortini and Merzbow — EMS Sessions

Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Japanese noise legend Massami Akita (Merzbow) bask in their mutual love for the EMS Synthi, a British synthesizer from the early 70’s notorious for it’s patch matrix, portability and distinct tone.

Astonishingly, these two disparate artists meld into a single sound as they flex the analog circuitry of the EMS Synthi in new ways; giving this classic synth a modern workout and proving that, in capable hands, a 40 year old analog synthesizer is a tool for the ages.

IMPREC431 available now.

Grooms — Exit Index

GroomsExit Index combines the abandon of pop with the unease of American life in 2017, cloaking its hooks in a clamor of samples and distortion, its agitation expressed in its dream-poetry lyrics. The album as a whole is a study in contrasts—light meeting dark, amplifier fuzz surrounding big melodies, sampled friction squaring off with fluidly played basslines and tightly wound rhythms. Album opener “The Directory” shrouds itself in synth-dappled mist until singer-guitarist Travis Johnson, backed by ghostly harmonies, asks with increasing intensity, “Where are my millions, my millions, my millions?” “Dietrich,” meanwhile, pins itself on a steady bassline, its guitars whirling into a maelstrom as Johnson sings promises of fealty to a far-away target.

Strange Americans — Borrow You, Brother

It’s the kind of music that the Carhartt-wearing, hard-working, industrial beer-drinking, regular Americans would listen to — the ones who could end up on an episode of TV’s Dirty Jobs. It’s a little raw, a bit loud, unapologetic and honest. It’s Americana rock and roll and it’s something that Denver’s Strange Americans are crafting with both brawn and finesse, like a hot rod mechanic bringing back an old barn find.

In a sense, Strange Americans are rescuing something from the rust pile — straight-forward, no frills rock and roll, and a matching aesthetic that is heavy on songwriting and storytelling, but presented with reverb-drenched punch and passion — the way The Band or Crazy Horse would have done it.

Borrow You, Brother is the new full length album, available now —  recorded with Echo Lab engineer and producer Matt Pence (Centro-matic, Justin Townes Earle).

Junior Astronomers — Body Language

North Carolina’s own Junior Astronomers return with Body Language, the long awaited follow up to their acclaimed 2013 album, Dead Nostalgia.

Over the last few years, Junior Astronomers have made friends and fans across the US through their touring and shows, supporting artists including Manchester Orchestra, Modest Mouse, All Get Out, Piebald, The Weeks, and many others. In between touring, the band has steadily written and released new music through a series of 7″ EPs, all the while working on material for their new album.

Body Language is a record about love, growth, and the inevitability of change through the course of life. The album thoughtfully portrays the nuances of coming of age, the complexities of relationships, and finding a new normal in a constantly changing world.

When it came time to record, Junior Astronomers set out to capture a sound that showcased their own evolution as a band. Working with engineer and producer Mike Pepe (Taking Back Sunday, Modern Chemistry), the band spent time exploring and recording sound in Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Recordings (Dinosaur Jr., Wilco, Ben Folds Five), before having Dan Millice (A$AP Rocky, Townes Van Zandt) at Engine Room Audio add the final mastering touches. The culmination of their efforts was an album that musically and lyrically shares a theme of rebirth and growth.
