Record Highlight — Ben Wilson & The Kimberlies

jacket front itunes.jpg

Ben Wilson and The Kimberlies is a band. Kind of.

That is to say Wilson and Doerner have known each other since they were three. Wilson used to want to make films. Doerner still makes short films and has his own business designing things for companies. Ben and Emily met and disregarded each other at age eight then reunited and started talking about things at thirteen. Emily is an auditor. Parker joined the scene when he was born. He is currently in high school and contributed a catchy chorus and may start to play with The Kimberlies once he can figure out the bass or something.

For several reasons, which he would rather not go into, Wilson has become less interested in film. He has always written songs. Some people like his songs. “Some people probably don’t, but no one has been brave enough to tell me to my face yet.” says Wilson. The new album, My Good Side, was made for the first group of people.

The melodies are pleasant, the instrumentation relatively simple… Everybody sings. Emily takes cello lessons. All of them can snap their fingers on beat. Some can play instruments. That’s why Ben Wilson and The Kimberlies is a band. Kind of.

Record Highlight — Dawes

The new double vinyl album – Stories Don’t End is available everywhere on April 9!  Pre-order it now!

Fundraise: Welcome to Atom Bomb City | First EP in a 3-part series full of mystery, intrigue & pedal steel.

What is Atom Bomb Project?

Atom Bomb Project is a music project that lots of people have been involved with since 2005. At the core, it is a concept album set in a dusty, western town at the dawn of the nuclear age.

This project began when Phil Artuz, Andy Abercrombie and Pat Grady started writing songs about a dystopic town and the people who lived there; we called this place Atom Bomb City.

The plot has changed several times over the years, this latest adaptation is performed by the band Ferguson, MO. The band is comprised of Blake Lange (drums, keys), Cody Ground (organs), Dow Douthitt (banjo), Justin Douglas (pedal steel, dobro, engineer) & Pat Grady (guitars, vocals).

We broke the story up into three sections and recorded an EP for each section. You can help out the project by contributing to our fundraising goal. With your help we can get all three EPs printed quickly so you can enjoy the story in its entirety!

How can you help?

By pre-ordering the records/downloads you help the band raise the money to produce the vinyl release of the album. Via the GottaGrooveBot, you can pre-order the first EP for $10 + shipping. Alternatively, you can get the download for $5.

Record Highlight — Mary Lattimore

Pathway006-Front

Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl, from Desire Path Recordings.

Seek solace. Be still and drift. Withdraw and be there. There. Inside. A chair awaits. A beginning built from an ending, from leaving, from afar. In times such as these, The Withdrawing Room is a safe haven to leave behind all that weighs heavily and surrounds us. We remark how comfortable the chair is, how exquisite the view is outside the window, the aroma, the breaths to be taken as you become aware of the minutia all around you and the sounds emanating from Mary Lattimore’s harp, warming your feet, your hands, your heart. Breathe. Previous collaborations have seen Mary matching wits with such esteemed luminaries as Thurston Moore, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile, Ed Askew, Fursaxa, and Jarvis Cocker. But for this debut work, Mary sequestered herself in a room, much like this one, to kindle three distinct works for keeping the listener company as he or she enjoys the view. The nuanced notes of the harp strings sing and reverberate amid subtle electronics courtesy of Jeff Zeigler on the 24-minute long piece “You’ll Be Fiiinnne;” “Pluto the Planet” meanders at a slow and steady pace as the sun makes its way across the sky and the gentle plucks of the silk and steel resonate within, beyond; the closing chaos of “Poor Daniel” charts a recklessness that embraces the listener as he or she quietly makes their way out of the room to tackle the world anew.

Record Highlight — Sightings

sightings

The noise rock parade that defies definition, set out on a mission of pure volume worship that is the post-decade pilgrimage of NY-based Sightings  After eight instinctive albums, the Sightings guys show no mercy with endless annihilation of their newest material on Terribly Well. All parts destruction measured against their abrasive songwriting. Jagged, collapsing rhythm based mayhem, guitars that can be mistaken as a freight train being ripped for scrap metal, only to be held together with panic stricken bass patterns that keep their voice from the edge of insanity. An accessible album for the unacceptable make this their finest to date.  Each song saws through the humanity, taking no hostages with this hectic industrial rock masterpiece. Edition of 500 (Dais Records).
