Record Highlight — Into Weather

Into Weather is an independent band based in San Francisco. The band consists of Marc Perry (vocals, bass, guitar), Ameya Mhatre (percussion) and Joshua Cano (vocals, synths, guitar).

Marc and Josh first met in high school jazz-band in Texas. They spent their weekends going to shows in the South Texas punk rock scene playing little songs and rocking out. Time moved on and several musical projects later, they found themselves years later both living in San Francisco and in need of a drummer. As fate would have it they met Ameya, a kindred spirit. Ameya had played in a few bands in his native Ottawa and New York City and was the product of a deeply musical family. Into Weather began in 2009.

Their new LP Wake Up will be available starting Sunday August 24 at their record release show at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco.

Record Highlight — Minor Characters

Minor Characters is an indie act from Chicago whose music is a mixture of well-crafted songwriting, pop sensibility, and a rare earnestness that’s difficult to overlook. The resulting combination is a carefully composed sound with classic pop leanings that ends up sounding both familiar and fresh.

The brainchild of the former folk singer-songwriter, Andrew Pelletier, Minor Characters was born of the desire to grow beyond performing solo, to create a more engaging and further reaching experience. Pelletier, Shelby Pollard (guitar), Adam Schneider (bass), and James Ratke (drums), bonded quickly over their love for Fleetwood Mac, Grizzly Bear, and Blonde Redhead.

Voire Dire is their new LP, and is available now!

Record Highlight — Tor Lundvall & Leila Abdul-Rauf

DAIS058-Tor7x480

Over the past few years, Tor Lundvall has thoughtfully displayed his ambient sound works in connection with Dais Records, releasing two retrospective multi-disc box sets and two full length albums. Apart from his collaboration with Tony Wakeford on Autumn Calls, collaborations with others have been extremely rare. Tor and multi-instrumentalist, Leila Abdul-Rauf (Vastum / Hammers of Misfortune / formerly of Amber Asylum) first got in touch in late 2011. Their exchanges eventually led to a musical collaboration of both like-minded artists joining in to illustrate their unique and personal visions of nature, life and art.

During a visit to Lundvall’s home in May 2012, Leila wrote a spontaneous track on Tor’s Winter Piano entitled Ibis. Tor recorded and engineered the track along with Leila’s vocals. Later that month, Lundvall added various sounds and ambient washes to the mix. A solo version of Ibis, featuring the original piano / vocals but with additional horn, was released on Abdul-Rauf’s debut LP Cold and Cloud on Saadi Saati Records in 2013 (Lundvall also designed the sleeve and created the cover art for this LP). The earlier, collaborative version of Ibis has remained unreleased until now. It was agreed that a 7″ was the perfect format.

On the reverse, Lundvall has written a new piece entitled Quiet Seaside constructed around Abdul-Rauf’s guitar riffs which Lundvall also recorded during her 2012 visit. The track captures Tor’s signature lush keyboard and ambient whirl. The early mix was sent to Leila who worked in her slow-moving brass performance and textured tone scales to make this work as introspective as it is beautiful.

Limited edition of 300 vinyl copies featuring artwork by Tor Lundvall.  Pre-order now.

Record Highlight — Jack Hotel

Günter Voelker, Joe Salvati, Marty Steinhausen, Josh Rector, and Casey Hollingsworth join forces to vanquish evil, poverty, and blight.

Your mom would say she “likes” it, but she would walk distractedly out of the room when you were trying to show her your favorite song. You’d be all, “Mom!” and she’d be like, “What? I’m still listening!”  The debut album from Jack Hotel — Good Sons and Daughters is available now!
