David First — Same Animal, Different Cages Vol. 2: Solomonos for Analog Synthesizer LP

Image of *Subscription: DAVID FIRST "Same Animal Different Cages" Vols. 1-4

About Same Animal, Different Cages:  “Sometime in the late winter of 2014 I began experiencing a certain nagging artistic malaise. I felt like I was spending too much energy on live performances and not being as creatively vital as I’d like. With that in mind, I resolved to cut some cords in the New Year and get back to the aspects of the process I’d been missing – learning new things and creating and recording new work. I also decided to challenge myself, without running roughshod, to not get bogged down in the ‘revising, editing and perfecting’ of things – always a potential pitfall in this digital age – and make ‘honest’, unmediated tracks that would directly reflect what I’d discover. Choosing an instrument a month, through a regimen of daily practice, I would develop and record material that would result in an album by month’s end.” – David First

The first four volumes in the series will include explorations on acoustic guitar, analog modular synthesizer, harmonica, and sitar.  Available as a subscription from Fabrica Records.

Edgar Allen Poe — The Raven

Cadabra Records

The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe is undoubtedly one of the most popular pieces of literature in the history of the horror genre, and here the poem gets the deluxe treatment with a meticulously professional delivery in every aspect. On this limited edition 7inch from Cadabra Records, the poem is here read by Anthony D.P. Mann, a Canadian-based filmmaker and actor with five feature films and a lifetime of stage and radio to his credit. In roles ranging from Count Dracula and the Phantom of the Opera, to Ebenezer Scrooge, his love of the classics is evident in his work. He is delighted to be lending his voice to a series of releases with Cadabra Records, indulging in his first passion – the theater of the imagination. The reading is backed by a score created by Italian composer and multi-instrumentalist Maurizio Guarini, most notably known as a core member of Goblin, who has released dozens of albums since the 1970s including soundtracks for cult classics like Suspiria, the European release of Dawn Of The Dead, and much more. Guarini adds a strikingly beautiful yet haunting score that accents the intense reading.

Happy Halloween!!!

Rocky Votolato / Noah Gundersen – Live On Lacquer Volume 1

Live On Lacquer Volume 1 cover art

Live On Lacquer preserves music in a way that is timeless and genuine. Much like the way records were made in the mid-20th century, these songs are captured live and cut in real-time onto lacquer discs with our 1940’s Scully vinyl lathe. Once cut, the lacquer masters are immediately sent off for plating and pressing. Each song is recorded in one take with no editing, allowing for the truest expression of the artist’s performance to be captured. The recording method used here is 100% analog and retains a level of humanity and imperfection often lost in modern digital productions.

The following equipment was used to make this record:
Microphones – Lawson 251, Royer 121, Coles 4038 (pair)
Preamps – Neve 1073
Compression – Empirical Labs EL8, Smart Research C2, FCS P3SME, Maselec MLA-3
Equalization – Squarewave Industries Net EQ and Stereo Width Control
Lathe – 1940’s Scully vinyl lathe with Westrex 3D-II Stereo cutter head and 1700 cutting amplifier
Record Press – Hamilton M-225 BX

Aura — Magic Lover b/w Let Go, It’s Over

Magic Lover b/w Let Go, It's Over cover art

In 1976, Aura quickly rose to the top as Hawaii’s preeminent funk band when it secured the most coveted gig in Honolulu’s nightclub scene: a residency at The Point After. Consisting of eight siblings from the Mendoza family of Waipahu, Aura became the first local band ever to play the venue. They kept the gig for ten years.

When they got into the studio in 1979, however, the band embraced ideas outside of their usual live act in the spirit of collaboration, absorbing new ideas from drummer Mike Kennedy, saxophonist Bill Popaka, and producer Gary Shimabukuro. The resulting eponymous album is a potent blend of jazz and funk highlighted by their signature sibling sound: an unstoppable horn section and two sisters as lead vocalists.

“Magic Lover” showcases what Aura can bring to the dance floor with its incredibly tight brass, solid groove, and dirty bass line—elevated by the voices of Beverly and Christine Mendoza. But a funk group is only as good as their ballads, and “Let Go, It’s Over” is proof they’ve got just as much talent when the tempo slows down.

Bill Jerpe – Bill Jerpe

Recorded in a makeshift motel room studio in the winter of 1969, and self-released in a micro-edition in 1970, this folk-rock gem must be counted among the earliest self-produced “private press” LPs…With it’s stripped-down production, and ‘basement tapes’ atmosphere, Bill Jerpe’s album offers listeners an unvarnished glimpse into the Hudson River Valley’s vibrant music scene in 1970. Top shelf DIY psych folk for fans of Late ’60’s Dylan, The Band, Jackson Frank, and F.J. McMahon’s “Spirit Of The Golden Juice”. Virtually unheard for 45 years, this release is long overdue — available now from Soft Estate Records.

iji – Bubble

iji (pronounced: ‘eehee’) is a West Coast pop group led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zach Burba of Seattle, WA. A consistent 10 years of touring and spewing countless, lush, home-made records and tapes has cemented iji as a notable voice in the USA’s underground DIY music scene. In 2015 iji released the highway opus, “Whatever Will Happen”, the band’s first studio album and debut with Team Love Records. iji now offers a new studio album that named itself “Bubble”.

While out on tour in 2015, iji began collectively writing down and sharing all band member’s dreams in one journal. This new practice inspired Burba to write an album in dream language; An album which explores the abstract and absurd tendencies of a confused and distracted mind. Recorded in only 5 days, the record is more of a band effort than any previous release, pointing to a raw and wild, new energy. Lightly tipping the scales more towards the DB’s than Squeeze; More towards Orange Juice than Aztec Camera. The current iji band, which features members of Sick Sad World, Pill Wonder and Neighbors, believes in playing without reservation, without fear. Trusting whatever comes out, simply for the love of wild music.
