Record Highlight — Johanna Samuels

25-year-old Johanna Samuels broadens the definition of pop music. The melodically and lyrically focused singer-songwriter sings about the depths and dualities of life with her unique bell-like voice. Standing on the shoulders of the great musicians of the 1960’s and 70’s she manages to create a sound and sense of musical place that is completely her own. The native New Yorker grew up in Los Angeles, where from a young age she sang in school choirs and obsessively learned to play the songs of her musical heroes by ear.

After moving back to New York at the age of 18, Samuels began writing her own songs alone in her bedroom. Soon after, she was playing solo shows at small downtown music venues like East Village’s Sidewalk Café.  With her feet firmly planted, Johanna plans to stick around the only ways she knows how: earnestly pouring out her heart, soul and creativity in the form of ear candy for us all.

Double Bind is her new full length album – pre-order it now!

Record Highlight – Maurizio Bianchi

Maurizio-AmenTest-1500x1500

The late 70′s rejection of punk and rock-oriented music within select underground subcultures was signified by the works of of bands like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire and Whitehouse. Using their network of record labels and propaganda, these like-minded noise makers created a sound and aesthetic that is known far and wide as something quite English.  But in Italy, a storm was slowly brewing in the works of a lone composer by the name of Maurizio Bianchi.   Starting in 1979, Bianchi formed his earliest sketches of abstract loop composition under the pseudonym Sacher-Pelz.  After only a few months, he felt it was time to start producing more conceptual works under his given name, sometimes shortening his authorship to only MB.  The following years saw some of industrial and ambient music’s most  genre defining works. Rumors surrounded a series of mischievous unauthorized releases only to be contradicted by his humble and earnest willingness to collaborate with other like minded composers coincidentally followed up by his ominous “disappearance” from music during the late 80′s / early 90′s.  His various comebacks always showed MB to be the master of his own device who undoubtedly influenced and inspired thousands of musicians, artists and composers with his creative output.  Most recently, MB has been reflective on his 35 year history in music and the impact he has had on it. His recent works show MB as undoubtedly reflective yet remaining persistently original.

Amentest is Bianchi’s most recent work employing the 7” single format, a medium that MB has only dabbled in briefly. Keeping his abrasive rhythmic sounds, beautiful use of delay patterns and selective subject matters at hand, MB’s genius still shows that he is as relevant today as he was back when he was quietly manufacturing his echoed sound sculptures in the foothills of Italy in 1979.

Limited to 300 copies. Edited by Kris Lapke (Alberich) with artwork by Ryan Martin (York Factory Complaint / Dais).  Available now from Dais.

Record Highlight — The Core Trio Featuring Matthew Shipp

The Core Trio was part of the the avant garde quartet Rosta. After the break up of the that group, The Core Trio formed in 2004. With the line up of Seth Paynter-saxes, Richard Cholakian – drums and bassist/leader Thomas Helton, The Core Trio began to develop their unique style of compositional improv.

In 2013 TCT recorded their first album with New York pianist and long time friend, Robert Boston. Shortly after the release, drummer Richard Cholakian left the group. After much consideration the group moved on and hired Joe Hertenstein to replace him. With Hertenstein, the trio played a very successful series of shows in NY at Downtown Music Gallery, Freedys Backroom, Goodbye Blue Monday and Douglas Street Collective.

While in NY the trio recorded their new record with piano great Matthew Shipp to be released July 11.

Label Spotlight: Mind Cure Records

2013-2014 been a whirlwind for Mind Cure Records – 12 singles by 12 Pittsburgh bands, 12 original songs, 12 cover songs not to mention videos about each band. It seemed like a bookend was needed for this project so I got together with a few friends to commemorate this occasion, and here you have it. Directed by Michael Seamans. Camera and Editing by Christopher Smalley.

Record Highlight — Troy Schafer

Having just finished up a grueling Master’s degree in Sound at the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago, it’s impressive, but unsurprising that spirited Chicagoan violin prodigy, sound designer, and composer Troy Schafer has been able to balance a wealth of inspiring musical work with his intense studies. While he’s best known for his weeping string and guitar arrangements for Kinit Her and Wreathes and composing with Burial Hex, he’s also kept plenty busy over the past few years dialing in a brilliantly soulful approach to more scholarly sonic endeavors. We couldn’t be more excited to present ‘Untitled No. 1;’ some of the most inspired work from Schafer yet, as he presents this holy trinity of his artistic identity. According to Schafer, the incredible A side is the culmination of 36 hours of recordings chopped up and expertly sequenced into a gorgeous collage packed with string arrangements, modular synthesis, algorithmic analog and digital systems, tape, and much more. The controlled pacing of the B side’s moodier dirge pushes the listener into steady footing before twisting him/her into panicked, screeching emotional heights via organized bursts of sonic chaos. Art Design by Dani Schafer.

Record Highlight — Flesh Wounds

Flesh Wounds cover art

Laura’s long-lost punk band Thee Scab Eaters got shelved when its other founding member had kids, so she recruited new guys for a loud rock band. Montgomery only knows chords and shrieks and really likes 1950’s R&B, so the band is really chordy and shrieky and likes to play songs from the 1950’s. Dan is really good on guitar and has been studying Chuck Berry for years, but his drum playing is the band’s ace-in-the hole since it lets Laura and Montgomery sing songs at the same time and pretend to be X. Flesh Wounds is from Chapel Hill, NC — Yes, the band is named after a line from Monty Python.

Record Highlight — Folkicide

Photo: I suspect next week will be an interesting one for the Folkicide brand.

Ultra-blues? misanthropop? despair-core? What exactly is Folkicide? Agreed, it fits all these categories yet it is much more-possibly a genre all its own.

Record Highlight — Amanda X

Hailing from the Kensington area of Philadelphia (home to infamous gangs such as the Yo’s, Twerks and Fuzzies), Amanda X imperviously sallys forth, creating an oasis of bedroom pop and post-punk among a landscape of toxic-speed, eroded enamel and chattering human skin suits.  Fused together, this set of songs from the whole of Amnesia, their debut LP coming soon from Siltbreeze Records.
