Record Highlight — Tor Lundvall & Leila Abdul-Rauf

DAIS058-Tor7x480

Over the past few years, Tor Lundvall has thoughtfully displayed his ambient sound works in connection with Dais Records, releasing two retrospective multi-disc box sets and two full length albums. Apart from his collaboration with Tony Wakeford on Autumn Calls, collaborations with others have been extremely rare. Tor and multi-instrumentalist, Leila Abdul-Rauf (Vastum / Hammers of Misfortune / formerly of Amber Asylum) first got in touch in late 2011. Their exchanges eventually led to a musical collaboration of both like-minded artists joining in to illustrate their unique and personal visions of nature, life and art.

During a visit to Lundvall’s home in May 2012, Leila wrote a spontaneous track on Tor’s Winter Piano entitled Ibis. Tor recorded and engineered the track along with Leila’s vocals. Later that month, Lundvall added various sounds and ambient washes to the mix. A solo version of Ibis, featuring the original piano / vocals but with additional horn, was released on Abdul-Rauf’s debut LP Cold and Cloud on Saadi Saati Records in 2013 (Lundvall also designed the sleeve and created the cover art for this LP). The earlier, collaborative version of Ibis has remained unreleased until now. It was agreed that a 7″ was the perfect format.

On the reverse, Lundvall has written a new piece entitled Quiet Seaside constructed around Abdul-Rauf’s guitar riffs which Lundvall also recorded during her 2012 visit. The track captures Tor’s signature lush keyboard and ambient whirl. The early mix was sent to Leila who worked in her slow-moving brass performance and textured tone scales to make this work as introspective as it is beautiful.

Limited edition of 300 vinyl copies featuring artwork by Tor Lundvall.  Pre-order now.

Record Highlight — Jason Crumer

The 6th full-length studio recording and first since his move to Baltimore, Jason Crumer’s Disqualifier steps beyond the shadow of Ottoman Black to yield a programmatic, mature and vulnerable setting. Dense brass, concrete sounds and mutated noise reveal a pointed narrative & unmatched compositional stroke. Equal parts harsh and ambient, Disqualifier is an exemplar for the American underground.

Recorded from nothing November, 2012 through July, 2013 in Baltimore, MD. Additional musicians: Jeff Stockham french hornChima Faraji tubaJeremy Mann trumpet, & Julian F drums. 150gm black vinyl housed in a custom letterpress printed jacket with download code. Edition of 250, available from Blossoming Noise.

Record Highlight — Kris Delmhorst

In this collection, Delmhorst acknowledges the work of an intentioned life – and the new American dream of presence and perspective in a frenetic time. Featuring new collaborators – songwriter/producer Anders Parker (Varnaline, Gob Iron, New Multitudes), drummer Konrad Meissner (Brandi Carlile, The Silos) and multi-instrumentalist Mark Spencer (Blood Oranges, Lisa Loeb, Laura Cantrell, Son Volt).

Record Highlight — Jack Hotel

Günter Voelker, Joe Salvati, Marty Steinhausen, Josh Rector, and Casey Hollingsworth join forces to vanquish evil, poverty, and blight.

Your mom would say she “likes” it, but she would walk distractedly out of the room when you were trying to show her your favorite song. You’d be all, “Mom!” and she’d be like, “What? I’m still listening!”  The debut album from Jack Hotel — Good Sons and Daughters is available now!

Record Highlight — 49th Parallel

Photo: 49th PARALLEL "49th Parallel"

LION LP-138 (LP + color insert)
UPC: 778578313814

•First official vinyl reissue since its original release in 1969

•LP limited to 500 copies

•One of the top Canadian rock albums of the psychedelic era

•Comes with color insert with band history and photos

In the spring of 1969, 49th Parallel had a hit in with ‘Twilight Woman’, a lovely song that sounds like a poppier version of what bands like Tomorrow were doing in England. That success led to the release of 49th Parallel’s only album. All hyperbole aside, it is easily one of the top Canadian rock albums of the psychedelic era. The album is strong throughout—from the pulsating psychedelia of ‘Lazerander Filchy’ and the ultra-strange ‘(The) Magician’, the shimmering beauty of 'Twilight Woman', to the quintessential slashing guitars punk edginess of ‘Now That I'm a Man’ and ‘(Come On Little Child &) Talk To Me’. Dan Lowe's blazing fuzz guitar work stands out on ‘Missouri’ and also when matched by organist Jack Velker's brilliant work on ‘Eye To Eye’, ‘Talk To Me’ and ‘(The) People’.

Track List:
Side 1:
1. Now That I’m A Man (2:33)
2. Get Away (2:35)
3. Eye to Eye (2:56)
4. Missouri (3:28)
5. Lazerander Filchy (3:03)

Side 2:
1. (Come On Little Child &) Talk To Me (3:00)
2. (The) Magician (3:44)
3. Twilight Woman (2:32)
4. Close The Barn Door (3:14)
5. The People (2:51)
