Grace Love & The True Loves – Self Titled

Grace Love and the True Loves cover art

Grace Love and the True Loves is an original 9-piece soul sensation from Seattle, WA. Following in the footsteps of Stax, Motown, King and Daptone artists, but with a sound all their own, Grace Love and the True Loves are setting a course as the next hot soul and funk number ready to sweep the nation with true cross-over appeal. On vocals, Grace Love is Seattle’s shining jewel of grit, beauty and power – think Etta James and Betty Wright meet Mahalia Jackson. Backed by the True Loves, her vocals float effortlessly over kickin’ back beats, smart horns, syncopated rhythms and sweet B-3 color. It’s the hip swinging, booty shaking, heart freeing sound you crave to hear live, but rarely do. Recorded directly to tape at Studio Litho, the full length self-titled album, is sure to bring rave reviews with a sound altogether unique to the Pacific Northwest.

The Self Titled record is available in a very limited quantity now.

Hackensaw Boys — Charismo

CharismoCoverArt.jpg

Charismo is the Hackensaw Boys record you’ve been waiting to hear. The 11-track album feels like the zenith release of the band’s 17 years, gathering their diverse life experiences and myriad of roots influences, and crystallizing them into a magnum opus on the Hackensaw way of being. Traditional Appalachian and Delta music lay the groundwork, but it’s injected with a heavy dose of the contemporary, good-times-roll kind of spit and vinegar the band has become known for over the years.

Produced by Larry Campbell – who has lent his talents to Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, and countless others – Charismosees the band reeled in and slightly refined, though still as spirited as ever. The songs (all written by longtime Hackensaws David Sickmen and Ferd Moyse) are tinged with an attitude of scrappy resilience, spinning tales and metaphors of everyday, working class struggles and triumphs. With Campbell’s production, the Hackensaw’s somewhat casual, porch-front aesthetic is sharpened around the edges, focusing in on the simple beauty of their melodies and the earnestness in their delivery.

Record Highlights — Dick Diver

Dick Diver "New Start Again"  Dick Diver "Calendar Days"

One year after releasing Dick Diver’s third album, Melbourne, Florida, Trouble In Mind is pleased as punch to re-present the revered Melbourne, Australia band’s first two albums —  2011’s New Start Again and 2013’s critically acclaimed (and The Age-nominated Best Album) Calendar Days for eager & discerning listeners.

The band sprung to life in 2008 from four talented songwriters & members of Melbourne’s (still) thriving DIY/Punk scene who sought inspiration in the precious, yearning chords & poetic lyrics of Brisbane’s Robert Forster and Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens rather than the squall & feedback of Aussie punk forefathers The Saints or the ugly, brutish pummelling of feedtime or the Cosmic Psychos. The band’s lyrics speak to a very real & present Australian existence, often referencing everyday slices of life and utilizing native turns of phrase, congealing it all into rich earworms with casual, affable, scrappy charm.

Record Highlight — Robbie Fulks

Robbie Fulks Upland Stories Album Artwork

Robbie Fulks‘s storytelling through folk and bluegrass music on Upland Stories delivers the quieter, sometimes unsettling truths of humanity.

Coming of age in the 1960s and 1970s in Virginia and North Carolina, at the edge of the broad “upland” region referenced in the record’s title, provided depth and detail for Fulks’s songs about the mysteries of memory, the vanishing of cherished things, and the struggles of everyday life. Robbie tries to make songs that offer more than verse-chorus-hook: songs that have space, calmness, unresolved tensions, and the hallmarks of lived experience. This sort of complexity is displayed in “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals,” an intimate folk song from the perspective of a man who has let life’s possibilities pass him by, and in “Never Come Home,” in which a sick man returns to spend his last days among an unwelcoming clan of pious, hard-bitten East Tennesseans.

Available from Bloodshot Records April 1 (pre-order is up now).

Record Highlight — Minas

The rare 1983 Minas (Orlando and Patricia) record – Num Dia Azul takes Brazilian and American roots to create a sound that is fresh and innovative, from ballads tinged with melancholic traits of Blues and Choro, to Folk coasting on the subtle coolness of a Bossa Nova pulse, to upbeat Sambas elaborated with instrumental jazz improvisation, scat singing and whimsical whistling.

Record Highlight — Beech Creeps

Beech Creeps

Word is Beech Creeps formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2013. Despite being devoted to drinking rum and lazing on hammocks, they quickly became a favorite at venues like Death By Audio and Shea Stadium for their balls out live shows. And after releasing in rapid succession the digital/cassettes Meet the Creeps and The Crashing Booms, Beech Creeps has emerged from the studio (the studio in this case being the immense gallery at Bushwick’s Secret Project Robot) with Beech Creeps, available from Monofonus Records.

Recorded by Jonathan Schenke who has worked with Parquet Courts and PC Worship, this self-titled album captures the glory of the Creepsound– at times sublime, crusty, swirling and headbanging. This is a record of solid rock, liquid water, floating detritus and violent storms. Lightning and thunder and the beautiful calm that follows. It growls, it screams, it thumps, it drives. Yes, you are caught in the ocean whirlpool of rock n’ roll, straight down to the garbage disposal at the bottom and you can’t escape until it lets you go, right about the 39 minute mark.

Record Highlight — Jeremy Gara

jeremygara-limn-frontcover

Jeremy Gara, drummer of Arcade Fire, announces his first solo album – Limn.  Recorded over the last many months and assembled this last fall, Limn is a melodic, dense, and noisy ambient record… a collection of organized improvisations, of solo creative moments in response to familiar collaborative efforts.  Divinity, the first song on the album, is streaming here and here.  Mastered by Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent), Limn will be released March 11 by NRCSS Industry on vinyl, on cassette, and digitally.
