Record Highlight — The Evens

The Evens are a band from Washington, D.C. Ian MacKaye (of Fugazi, Minor Threat) plays baritone guitar and Amy Farina (of The Warmers) plays drums. They both sing. Their brand new album, The Odds, is available for pre-order now from Dischord Records.  Street date is November 20, 2012.

Record Highlight — Amy Rigby

The new Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby album A Working Museum will be available on LP any day now (unless you were lucky enough to grab one from a tour stop).

The eleven original tunes on A Working Museum, written separately and together by Eric & Amy, were recorded during their epic relocation from Europe to America this past year. The stories and the sounds on the disc pile up in layers – improvisations, personal histories, psychedelic interludes, the threat of disco, Amy playing a dodgy Crumar Insta-Piano, Eric manipulating the sound as it went down, the past tumbling out of a box in a storage space, amplifiers in the kitchen, guitar shredding, singing, silly dancing, sombreros, age and innocence.

Record Highlight — The Big Cats

The Ancient Art Of Leaving cover art

Two years in the making and with more than 10,000 hours logged as a rock and roll band, The Big Cats are proud to announce the release of their ambitious 25 song album, The Ancient Art Of Leaving.  The band continues to fine tune it’s melodic touches while spending considerable effort discovering new territory. Most noteworthy, they’ve reclaimed pieces of their shared history spent in Little Rock playing punk rock and put it into the mix. The combination is genuinely thrilling. Maybe it is possible to age gracefully [and with spirit intact] in the digital age.

This is a limited run vinyl version that features 3 LPs pressed on 180 gram vinyl in a triple gatefold sleeve with lyric insert and a digital download card. The first 100 copies are on clear vinyl, while the following 200 are on black. Pre-order today!

Record Highlight — Jacob Morris

Jacob Morris is from Athens, Georgia. He started playing cello in Austin, TX at the age of four, and played with his musical family until he left home. The unique music community that is Athens attracted him years back. and since then he has supported some of its finest musicians and songwriters playing cello, guitar, bass, and keys with artists such as Ham 1, Vic Chesnutt, Liz Durrett, Madeline, and currently Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers. Taking cues from the psychedelic pop and folk of this robust scene, Jacob has crafted a stellar debut with his Moths album (available December 4, 2012). A beautiful voice — reminiscent of Elliott Smith, Love is Overtaking Me-era Arthur Russell, and John Cale — paired with a timeless songwriting sense that evokes reflection and meditation akin to a Nick Drake or Roy Harper track, Morris seams it all together with a roster of eclectic musicians that have played with everyone from The Olivia Tremor Control, Silver Jews, Clem Snide, and many others. Madeline added some chilling harmonies that give some songs a Tusk-era Fleetwood Mac feel. A good post-breakup listen, Moths was recorded over three sessions throughout the past two years in Nashville with the talented producer/engineer Loney John Hutchins. The result of these sessions is a lush sonic landscape that is breathtaking at its most beautiful moments, and unassumingly charming at its most humble.

Record Highlight — We Were Skeletons

With the musical prowess and aggression of bands like Fugazi and Shotmaker, We Were Skeletons’ unique brand of technical, groovy, and emotional hardcore should appeal to long-time fans of the genre while still pushing its boundaries. Imagine Hot Snakes, Slint, Sleepytime Trio, mewithoutYou, and Off Minor all rolled into one breathtaking statement. Their new LP – Blame & Aging is the band’s best collection of songs to date.  Grab it now from Topshelf Records!

Record Highlight — Tift Merritt

For Traveling Alone, Tift Merritt‘s Yep Roc Records label debut, Merritt put together her dream cast to make a record that was real, raw and live off the floor. Recorded in Brooklyn in eight days, this album was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket), features a guest appearance by Andrew Bird and a band that includes Marc Ribot (Tom Waits), Eric Heywood (Pretenders, Son Volt), John Convertino (Calexico) and longtime collaborator Jay Brown. These songs were written and traveled by Tift Merritt.

Record Highlight — Flatliners

We were extremely excited when Fat Wreck Chords enlisted GGR to press The Flatliners debut 2005 album Destroy To Create on vinyl for the first time ever!  While the color copies are sold out, you can pre-order the black vinyl while they last at Fat Wreck.  Don’t hold up too long!

Read what vocalist & guitarist Chris Cresswell had to say about the release below:

“Ever unearthed an old drawing you did as a child at your parent’s house? Ever gone back and read the weird shit people wrote in your High School year book? Feels odd doesn’t it? You’re proud of what you’ve accomplished, but for some reason, you can’t help but laugh. Well this October, we will be releasing our first album Destroy to Create on vinyl for the very first time ever. The lovely folks at Fat Wreck Chords have reluctantly agreed to allow our die-hard fans to finally snatch up these songs on a piece of wax. And we think it’s a pretty cool way to celebrate the band’s 10th Anniversary.”

Record Highlight — Wovenhand

The Laughing Stalk cover art

One could never accuse David Eugene Edwards of being idle; he is a man of purpose, a man of mission, a man consumed. In the two years since the release of Wovenhand’s critically acclaimed The Threshingfloor, he has toured the US three times and Europe four; has created a 110-page hand-illustrated book of lyrics (Black of the Ink); released a double-live album/DVD (Live at Roepaen); was recruited for a new album and reunion tour of Australian indie legends Crime and The City Solution; and now, has revealed an extraordinary new Wovenhand album, The Laughing Stalk.

The Laughing Stalk mines the bottomless chasm of a desperate man at the mercy of an inscrutable God; of one standing at the foot of a great mountain, the top of which is shrouded in cloud and mystery. What is there but power and terror? The urgency to reckon is palpable, is unavoidable. The rhythms are insistent, the guitars unyielding, and melodies are potent and unrestrained. David Eugene Edwards is as much a force of nature as ever, pulling the entire band forward with the strength of his voice, as if it had its own gravitational field. One can’t quite grab ahold of a singular style—each note is informed by the royal heritages and traditions of punk, of country, of rock & roll, industrial, and Native American music. The hues and colors in the music are rich and deep.
