Record Highlight — The Washington Beach Bums

The Washington Beach Bums party.  They used to party, they party now, they will party again.  So, the title of their latest record seems fitting – Party!  You can grab it from Spacebuxxx Records, out of Columbus, Ohio; or just check the band out at one of their live performances — chances are it will be a party.

Record Highlight — New Tongues

New Tongues is the first band to use our newly-launched crowdfunding platform, the GrooveBot.  Be sure to check them out, and lend any support their campaign as you see fit!

New Tongues started when Justin Nardy and Shane Johnson met on the street in the summer of 2011 and began trading records. Mike Quinn joined after 2 months of writing between Justin and Shane. After playing only 4 shows together, they traveled to Webster University in St. Louis to record with Daniel Ruder (Jack Buck, etc.). With Dan’s help, they recorded 8 songs for this 40-minute debut LP.

Record Highlight — Esme Patterson

Denver “folk & roll” songstress Esmé Patterson released her solo album All Princes, I with Illegal Pete‘s record label, Greater Than Collective.

Described by Patterson in an interview as “raw,” All Princes, I is greatly influenced by Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Feists’s Metals. Making appearances on the album are Nathaniel Rateliff, Roger Green (formerly of the Czars), Ben Desoto (Czars, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bare Bones), Genevieve Patterson and Sarah Anderson (Paper Bird), Carrie Beeder, Eric Moon, Mike Fitzmorris, Will Duncan, and many more.

Patterson is a founding member of the band Paper Bird, and has performed with them in venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. As a solo artist, Patterson has recorded, written and toured with a wide array of artists including Tennis, Anais Mitchell, Neko Case, Flobots, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Joe Sampson, and many others.

Record Highlight — Masked Intruder

Masked Intruder are four masked men: Blue (self-described “hopeless romantic” and probably the brains behind the operation), Red (said to be a “loose cannon”, plays drums, the wheelman), Yellow (the “heart breaker” that plays bass, so you know he’s a goon), and Green (renowned “wild man” and extra nasty due to a short guy complex). Their identities are largely unknown, but the Feds claim to have quite a file on this quartet. There’s a few known accomplices too, such as Intruder Pink, who makes an appearance on the duet, “Heart Shaped Guitar”. Don’t let her melodious voice and fine figure fool ya, she’s a cruel maneater. Allegedly.

Grab the new LP from Fat Wreck Chords in January!

Record Highlight — Mike Cooley

Mike Cooley - The Fool On Every Corner CD

The Fool On Every Corner is Drive By Truckers’ Mike Cooley‘s first solo album!  The record features live acoustic versions of fan favorite songs “Carl Perkins Cadillac”, “3 Dimes Down”, “Marry Me”, “Shut Up And Get On The Plane”, and more. Recorded in February 2012 at the Earl in Atlanta GA and at the Melting Point in Athens GA. Features one new song, “Drinking Coke and Eating Ice” and a Charlie Rich cover, “Behind Closed Doors”.  Grab it at indie retailers (and beyond) on January 15, 2013.

Record Highlight — Nahnee Bori

Place cover art

Nahnee Bori is the latest addition to the yk records family but far from an unfamilar voice. Previously, he’s spent his time as one-half of the core of Kindercastle as well as creating and performing alongside Uncle Skeleton.

Originally, Cody Uhler used the Nahnee Bori moniker to explore minimalist, ambient, nature inspired compositions on his album Lotic Prattle. Never feeling fully compelled to stick with one strict musical undertaking he decided to undertake a new challenge with his second full-length LP Place… to fuse the lessons learned from longform ambient creations with proper traditional pop structures.

The second full-length album from Nahnee Bori, and his first long player with yk records is Place  —  a delightful pop record filled with just the right mixture of catchy, humor, melancholy and wonder. Grab a copy on wax from YK Records today!

Record Highlight — Starflyer 59

Starflyer 59 has been around for just about 20 years. For the first time ever, they produced a new album completely on their own.  IAMACEO is available for pre-order now from Undertow Music Collective in a few limited edition variants.

Mixed by JR McNeely, mastered by TW Walsh.  Grab one today!

Record Highlight — Rainbows Are Free

Originally released by Guest Room Records in 2010, we are proud to have pressed this newly-cut re-pressing of the record Believers In Medicine by Rainbows Are Free.

A dark mix of seventies British metal and the modern occult, Rainbows Are Free have summoned forces that instantly bring to mind the heaviest music from contemporaries with whom they’ve shared the stage (The Black Angels, Dead Meadow, Black Mountain, Lions, The Sword, The Strange Boys) and recall their dark roots from being lifetime fans of classic stoner metal and glam rock (Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Queen).

Record Highlights — Fountains Of Wayne Reissues

Fountains of Wayne – Self Titled – The debut release from power pop masters, the record contains the standouts “Radiation Vibe”, “Sink to the Bottom”, “Please Don’t Rock Me Tonight”, as well as the ode to the suburban commuter, “Sick Day”. On vinyl for the first time in 15 years.

Utopia Parkway – Available on vinyl for the first time ever, the record features, “Red Dragon Tattoo”, “Denise”, and, “Laser Show”. Pitchfork described the album as, “suburbia perfectly captured by four suburbanites with suburban sounds.”

Grab them at indie retailers everywhere!

Record Highlight — Two Cow Garage

Columbus, Ohio’s Two Cow Garage is reissuing their monumental 2004 record – The Wall Against Our Back on an extremely limited edition pressing of red 180 gram waxGrab it while you can!

Words from TCG’s Shane Sweney on the record:

After two years of almost constant touring on our first record, Please Turn the Gas Back On, in 2004 we decided to seclude ourselves in the ranch land of north Texas and record the songs that we had been hammering on over that long stretch of touring. We had no idea what the reaction would be to Wall Against Our Back. It just all happened so fast, and we were all so focused on doing it, that we had little time to postulate on what anyone else’s thoughts would be about it. As it turns out, and lucky for us, people did care, more than we ever could have hoped for. As we continued to tour and record, The Wall Against Our Back became a distant blur in the rearview mirror of our catalogue of songs. And soon we let it fall by the wayside and go out of print. Yet, it’s a struggle to think of a show where there hasn’t been at least one person requesting us to play a song “Off of that red record . . .” And now we’re doing something about it. Through the years TCG has moved progressively away from Wall’s sound musically, but we are no less proud of The Wall Against Our Back. It’s nice to welcome this record back into the fold. Thanks for sticking with it, and us.
