Record Highlight — Living Serious

I Can Fight This Feeling cover art

Even at the last of the small dance clubs, they were starting to play music that brought the dancers to a halt, like hunters in a ballet some witch has cast a spell upon; songs so raw, barbed, snotty we would hang our heads and walk off the dance floor…Living Serious is Andrew Baranek, Ronnie Barr, Cheddar J. Magnificent, and Jey Boxer.  I Can Fight This Feeling is available now in high quality Tip-On retro jackets.

Record Highlight — Orchid Spangiafora

Flee Past’s Ape Elf is a 2LP Edition of 600 – a splendid, expanded reissue of this monster album available very soon from Feeding Tube Records, which most people know from its placement on the NWW List. Stapleton even went so far as to name a track (“Fashioned to a Device Behind a Tree”) after a mis-hearing of one of Flee Past’s’ many memorable lines. The music has its roots in Hampshire College’s Electronic Music Studio in the early 1970s. While taking a class on Electronic Composition, Robert Carey was smitten by the potentialities lurking inside piles of reel-to-reel tape. Presented with a stack of such stuff, mostly recorded off of television, he began an epic stumble into the universe of musique concret. Carey refashioned banal spoken material into bizarre, hilarious and shockingly musical suites that you could listen to for sheer yucks or revelatory juxtapositions. Influenced by Gysin/Burroughs/Somerville’s cut-up techniques, as much as Zappa’s 1960s editing flair, Carey (rechristened Orchid Spangiafora by some wise-ass music professors) created new savage aural realities that you could almost dance to. The original album was released by Twin/Tone Records in 1979, at the behest of the Suicide Commandos’ Chris Osgood (who’d been Carey’s roommate at Hamsphire).

Record Highlight — Osunlade

osunlade

Osunlade / Dionne — What gets you high?  Dionne is a one of a kind rarity. Osunlade pulls and draws from the lovely days of old, paying homage house music as it once was, when vocal edits were the vibe and pulse of an emerging sound. With traditional bata drums, filters that would put you in the mind of classic Nick Holder and just good ole fashioned groove on top of groove. The b-side is a ode to the bossa sound with a pulsating heart beat,  funky melodies and smooth rhodes topped with a quirky yet fun vocal asking the question “what gets u high”?   Blessings from Osunlade.

Record Highlight — Moon Taxi

The sound of Moon Taxi pulls from the many different facets and interests of its members.  Trevor, who got his start in music playing trumpet in school, is driven by his love for reading, cooking and yoga; while Tyler, who spent his younger years jamming on a drum kit with friends, is driven by an immense appreciation and knowledge of pop culture. Spencer, who used to record himself in his parents garage, has transformed his knowledge of film into producing videos for Moon Taxi’s music. Wes, meanwhile, developed his musical process from classical composers like Mozart and spends his time on tour searching for golf courses while Tommy spends his free time going to concerts and carefully following Nashville’s local music scene.  Their new album, Cabaret streets on Black Friday — grab it when you can!

Record Highlight — Buffalo Clover

In the simplest terms, Buffalo Clover are vintage rock ‘n’ rollers, but the South tends to creep in. This brand of southern soul bears a striking resemblance to their idols, the Rolling Stones and The Band. Taking a cue from Bob Dylan with a lyrical poeticism inspired by the troubled times, and Janis Joplin with her rough-hewn-but-honest, bottom-of-the-heart soulful lilt, Buffalo Clover emulate their musical paragons in a style of their own.

The official U.S. record release party is November 14, 2013 in Nashville.
