Record Highlight — Blue Oaks

Blue Oaks is a duo from Sacramento, CA that plays bluesy gritty tunes. Consisting of Brendan Stone on vocals and guitar with Cody Walker on drums. They hone a powerful dynamic that is hard to match. From Walker’s pounding drums to Stone’s intricate versing, Blue Oaks’ much anticipated debut vinyl single “Hit by a Train from New York City Blues” with “Skeleton Key” should not be missed. Tracked to analog tape at The Atomic Garden Studio with producer Jack Shirley in Palo Alto, CA, featuring hand sketched artwork by Aaron M. Johnson. This record will be released December 7th, 2013 limited to 300 copies, all in unique random colored vinyl.

Record Highlight — Lake Street Dive

How is it that something so unlikely can also be so infectious, so naturally exhilarating? Pulling in familiar elements and irreverently scrambling and recombining them, Lake Street Dive are at once jazz-schooled, DIY-motivated, and classically pop obsessed. Beginning with catchy songs that are by turns openhearted and wryly inquisitive, this northeastern quartet proceeds to inject them with an irresistible blend of abandon and precision. Composed of drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, vocalist Rachael Price, and trumpet-wielding guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson, Lake Street Dive encompasses a myriad of possibilities within its members’ collective experiences, and the resultant music is a vivid, largely acoustic, groove-driven strain of indie-pop. “It seems the only limitation we have,” Kearney explains, “ is that we try to make music that we would like listening to.”

The new record, Fun Machine, is available now from Signature Sounds.

Record Highlight — Youth Code

Untitled-1

Los Angeles wrath-induced EBM outfit Youth Code’s debut self titled album unleashes 10 bitter outbursts of dance destruction saddling strict BPM worship following the Wax Trax blueprint but wretch out a hardcore angst stylistically all its own.  An explosive cohesion of material to follow up the storm front of their elusive demo tape and redefined single on Angry Love Productions.

We are now proud to announce their debut LP on DAIS RECORDS.  Pre Order now – shipping September 3rd.

Record Highlight — Dawes

The new double vinyl album – Stories Don’t End is available everywhere on April 9!  Pre-order it now!

Fundraise: Welcome to Atom Bomb City | First EP in a 3-part series full of mystery, intrigue & pedal steel.

What is Atom Bomb Project?

Atom Bomb Project is a music project that lots of people have been involved with since 2005. At the core, it is a concept album set in a dusty, western town at the dawn of the nuclear age.

This project began when Phil Artuz, Andy Abercrombie and Pat Grady started writing songs about a dystopic town and the people who lived there; we called this place Atom Bomb City.

The plot has changed several times over the years, this latest adaptation is performed by the band Ferguson, MO. The band is comprised of Blake Lange (drums, keys), Cody Ground (organs), Dow Douthitt (banjo), Justin Douglas (pedal steel, dobro, engineer) & Pat Grady (guitars, vocals).

We broke the story up into three sections and recorded an EP for each section. You can help out the project by contributing to our fundraising goal. With your help we can get all three EPs printed quickly so you can enjoy the story in its entirety!

How can you help?

By pre-ordering the records/downloads you help the band raise the money to produce the vinyl release of the album. Via the GottaGrooveBot, you can pre-order the first EP for $10 + shipping. Alternatively, you can get the download for $5.

Record Highlight — Mary Lattimore

Pathway006-Front

Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl, from Desire Path Recordings.

Seek solace. Be still and drift. Withdraw and be there. There. Inside. A chair awaits. A beginning built from an ending, from leaving, from afar. In times such as these, The Withdrawing Room is a safe haven to leave behind all that weighs heavily and surrounds us. We remark how comfortable the chair is, how exquisite the view is outside the window, the aroma, the breaths to be taken as you become aware of the minutia all around you and the sounds emanating from Mary Lattimore’s harp, warming your feet, your hands, your heart. Breathe. Previous collaborations have seen Mary matching wits with such esteemed luminaries as Thurston Moore, Meg Baird, Kurt Vile, Ed Askew, Fursaxa, and Jarvis Cocker. But for this debut work, Mary sequestered herself in a room, much like this one, to kindle three distinct works for keeping the listener company as he or she enjoys the view. The nuanced notes of the harp strings sing and reverberate amid subtle electronics courtesy of Jeff Zeigler on the 24-minute long piece “You’ll Be Fiiinnne;” “Pluto the Planet” meanders at a slow and steady pace as the sun makes its way across the sky and the gentle plucks of the silk and steel resonate within, beyond; the closing chaos of “Poor Daniel” charts a recklessness that embraces the listener as he or she quietly makes their way out of the room to tackle the world anew.

Record Highlight — Chuck Prophet

On Februrary 7th, Chuck Prophet returns with Temple Beautiful – a nuanced, insightful, passionate ode to San Francisco: his adopted hometown; his muse; his drug of choice…

San Francisco. It’s a great place to come and wave your freak flag or whatever you want to call it. It can suck you under. That first hit. It really does a whammy to you. And if you’re like me you can find yourself chasing the San Francisco dragon for the rest of your life. That’s what the record is about.

The record’s an unsentimental (though loving) tour of San Francisco. Made in San Francisco by San Franciscans about San Francisco. My effort to tap into the history, the weirdness, the energy and spontaneity that brought me here in the first place.” ~ Chuck Prophet
