Bobby Patterson — It’s Just A Matter Of Time

Bobby Patterson It’s Just a Matter of Time LP

If this 1972 record for the Paula label was the sum total of Dallas, Texas soul man Bobby Patterson’s career output, then he’d still be reckoned a cult figure among R&B fans. In fact, it’s so good that the fact that he went on to cut five other albums and produce artists ranging from Fontella Bass to Chuck Jackson to Little Johnny Taylor almost seems besides the point.

This is a stone soul masterpiece, full of grit and groove, with a breathtaking stylistic breadth stretching from funky soul (“If You Took a Survey”; “How Do You Spell Love”) to romantic soul balladery (“I Get My Groove from You”) to James Brown-style workouts (“Make Sure You Can Handle It”) to socially-conscious, wah wah-drenched commentary (“The Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto”) and all points in between. But what really makes this record mind-blowing is that Patterson wrote all but one song (the one he didn’t write, “Right On Jody,” is an answer song to Johnnie Taylor’s big hit “Jody’s Got Your Girl and Gone”). Every soul searcher needs this one!

Brandtson — Letterbox

Brandtson: Letterbox Deluxe Reissue

Brandston‘s reissue campaign continues with debut album, Letterbox coming toSteadfast Records on April 12, 2019. Cleveland’s Brandtson – favorites of the 90’s emo-punk era – stood out with a pop-leaning punk sound highlighted by their intricate and infectious dual vocal harmonies and dueling guitar lines. Led by the anthemic charge of “Blindspot” and the starkly evocative “January”; their debut album, Letterbox, is a love letter to the beginning phases of their marriage of pop-leaning hooks and their hardcore punk past.

Originally released on Steadfast Records in 1997 and reissued the following year on Deep Elm Records, Steadfast Records is reissuing the album on limited edition vinyl and cassette for the very first time. The vinyl is limited to 500 total copies, housed in a gorgeous gatefold jacket, featuring restored and expanded artwork from the original Steadfast Records release.

Dirk Mustang — Leave My 80’s Alone

Image result for dirk mustang leave my 80s alone

Dirk Mustang is the alter ego of singer/songwriter Marcus Antoni is his epic music project attributed to hard rock and hairbands of the 1980’s.  The album aims to deliver a concise articulation of the various forms of rock that evolved starting with arena rock, to the pivotal decline and eventual demise of the styles with the advent of hairband and glam that quickly disappeared in the early 90’s.  Each song is like a trip back to the 80’s genre, and highlights what Marcus believed to be the best of the artistic styles that dominated the MTV generation and radio formats of the time.

The name of the album is a clear defense of the music Marcus (Dirk Mustang) and so many others grew up loving and listening to and still do to this very day.

The music has become somewhat of a novelty and although many discarded it as a very decadent and narrow style, many guitarists secretly revel in the amazing six string gods who flourished during this time of no holds barred technique which spawned many of the amazing legends who are still touring today.  After spending two years on “Leave My 80’s Alone” in his home studio (Green Room Studio) giving much care to detail and performance, if you listen closely, you can hear the crowds screaming and see the lighters held up high!

Chris Allen-Acetate

Who is the hardest working man in show business?  It could well be Cleveland’s own Chris Allen.  The leader of the much-loved now defunct Rosavelt,  besides his active solo career, he currently plays in The Lonesome Stars, The Scar Lovers, The Boys From The County Hell and the holiday season collective,  The Ohio City Singers.

Produced by the legendary Don Dixon,  Acetate is Chris’ third solo release, and the first committed to vinyl.  Take it from Dixon himself;  “Chris Allen is the most underrated songwriter in the country.  People like Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams ought to be hiding outside his house going through his trash looking for castoff material. Chris has a laser eye. ‘Acetate’ is my favorite, but I love every record I’ve done with him.”
