Barrie — Happy To Be Here

Barrie - Happy To Be Here.png

Inclusivity is at the heart of Barrie, the Brooklyn five-piece made of Barrie Lindsay, Dominic Apa, Spurge Carter, Sabine Holler and Noah Prebish. And on their debut LP Happy To Be Here, their multidimensional take on classic pop sounds awake and present, like a group that’s daydreaming but firmly there with one another. Barrie, the band, is primarily her project; on the record, which she co-produced with Jake Aron (Snail Mail, Solange, Grizzly Bear), Lindsay plays guitar, piano, synth and bass. But still, Barrie is distinctly not a solo project, and Happy To Be Here—out May 3, 2019 via Winspear—is very much a full band record.

Happy To Be Here offers snapshots of the band coming together in the city, after having lived all over: Boston, Baltimore, upstate New York, London, São Paulo via Berlin. “The scaffolding of this album is moving to New York and finding these people that make up the band,” Barrie says. “We’re very different, but we cover each other’s gaps personally and creatively, and are eager to learn from each other.”

Kelly Finnigan — The Tales People Tell

Kelly Finnigan, the lead singer of Bay Area-based indie-soul auteurs Monophonics, has announced his debut solo album ‘The Tales People Tell,’ out April 26 on Colemine Records. Over the course of the album’s 10 new, original songs, Kelly channels a multitude of influences that reflect a lifetime immersed in the music and culture of soul, R&B, and hiphop – it’s the story of an outsider that followed an unorthodox route, always guided by his own creative north star.

Kelly guided the songs on ‘The Tales People Tell’ from their conception all the way to the record pressing plant over the course of two years. He wrote and produced each track on the record and plays 10 instruments throughout, while enlisting the help of friends and legends like drummer James Gadson (Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Beck), members of Monophonics, and Kelly’s own father, prominent sideman/keyboardist Mike Finnigan (Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Etta James). The result is a timeless collection underscored by a sense of community, a family affair of a record that’s at once raw and gritty, tender and emotive, lush and symphonic.

Beowulf Umbrella — She’s Studying Evil

Recorded over three days in August 2018, and released March 15, 2019, Beowulf Umbrella’s She’s Studying Evil is the work of Tommy Keene band alumni Brad Quinn and John Richardson, along with session musicians on call at Richardson’s Drum Farm Studios in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Although a studio project in essence, Quinn performs under the Beowulf Umbrella name in Japan, where he lives, in both solo and in group configurations. The Dadaesque name of the group comes from an unpublished short story by Richard Brautigan. The EP includes performances by bassist and keyboardist Kevin Dailey, guitarist Adam Ollendorff, plus guest appearances by Mike Schlenker (lead guitar on “She’s Studying Evil”) and Paul Chastain (“Just Say the Word”).
